This research investigates the meaning and value of participation of university students in a teaching social service activity. It is conducted in a follow-up program sponsored by the Admissions Office and seek to understand the connection between changes in participants’ personality and the educational philosophy of Sogang University. Four students of the ‘Sogang Arrupe Volunteers Program’ are chosen as study participants. They are analyzed through narrative inquiry, using interviews and reports which the participants wrote, such as a teaching social service activity proposal, self-reflection notes, review reports, and the researchers’ observation notes. The experiential significance of the volunteer teaching social service activity is investigated in terms of the influence of the human relationships involved, difficulties experienced, opportunities for growth, and the influence of the educational philosophy of Sogang University. The relationships experienced in the course of the activities are investigated in terms of the communication with the children dealt with and ties with co-volunteers. The difficulties which participants experienced become an opportunity to promote group bounding, not a factor of disruption. The investigation confirms that the teaching social service activity provides an opportunity for growth and maturity, whether or not participants recognizes this. It finds, moreover, that 'educating talented men for the service of others,' which is a key element of the educational philosophy of Sogang University, directly or indirectly influenced participants.

본 연구는 입학사정관제의 추수지도 프로그램의 일환으로 진행된 교육봉사활동에 참여한 대학생들의 경험의 의미와 가치를 탐색하고, 그들의 인성변화와 대학교육이념과의 연관성을 이해하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 교육봉사활동에 1년 이상 참여한 서강대학교 ‘아루페봉사단’ 단원 4명을 연구 참여자로 선정하였고, 이들과의 심층면담과 참여자들이 작성한 교육봉사활동 계획서, 자기성찰노트, 교육봉사활동 감상보고서 및 연구자의 현장노트 등의 자료를 활용하여 내러티브 탐구 방법으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 교육봉사활동 경험의 의미는 관계맺음, 혼란, 성장의 기회, 서강대학교 교육이념의 영향으로 나타났다. 교육봉사활동에서의 관계맺음은 아이들과의 소통, 동료 봉사자들과의 인연으로 나타났으며, 봉사자들이 겪은 어려움은 방해요인이 되기보다는 더욱 결속력을 있는 단체로 이끄는 계기가 되었다. 이처럼 교육봉사활동은 봉사자들에게 의식 또는 무의식중에 성장과 성숙의 기회가 되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 교육봉사활동을 통해 서강대학교의 교육이념인 ‘타인을 위해 봉사하는 인재양성’이 그들에게 직·간접적으로 영향을 미치고 있음이 드러났다.
