The purpose of this research is to analyze how regional environment of education has influenced the teachers' effort to develop their competencies. This research stems from a critical perspective that if there is a difference among degrees of teachers' self- development, the regional gaps in educational environment will deepen and become permanent. This research investigated the regional income levels of the whole country and compared the highest and lowest groups. This research proved that teachers' effort for self-development varies according to the educational environment. The result leads to following conclusions. First, it can be inferred that regional educational environment affects the teachers' effort for completing the training course more, and affects their achievement of degree relatively less. Second, the total number of students has negative effect on teachers' effort to develop their competencies. Third, the budget for teachers' professional development has positive influence on both training completion and degree level. Fourth, the improvement of private education market and socio- economical level have meaningful influence on teachers' professional development effort. As a result of this research, teachers' professional development is necessary to solve the educational gap between different regions.

이 연구는 지역의 교육환경에 따라 교사의 전문성 계발 수준에 차이가 있다면 지역 간의 교육격차가 더욱 심화, 고착화될 것이라는 문 제의식에서 지역별 교육환경이 교사들의 전문성 계발 노력 정도에 어떤 영향을 미치는 지에 대해 분석하였다. 우선 전국 시도의 평균 소득수준에 따라 소득수준 최상위와 최하위 지역을 선정하여 두 집단으로 나누고, 지역별로 교육환경의 격차와 교사 전문성 계발 노력 정도에 대한 차이가 있는 지에 대해 분석한 후, 지역별로 어떠한 교육환경 요소가 교사의 전문성 계발 수준에 영향을 미치는 지에 대해 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결과를 살펴보면, 첫째, 지역의 교육환경은 교사의 학위 수준보다는 교원의 연수 이수 수준에 좀 더 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 둘째, 전체 학생수는 교사의 전문성 계발 노력 수준에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 셋째, 교사당 역량강화비 는 교사의 연수 이수 수준과 학위 수준 모두에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 지역별 교육환경 특성 중 사교육 시장 발달 수준과 사회 경제적 수준이 교사의 전문성 계발 노력에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 끼치는 것이 나타났다. 이 연구결과는 지역의 교육환경 차이가 교사의 전문성 계발 수준에 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.
