As three major wars had broken out in the transitional period between the 16th and 17th centuries turned nation's land into ruins and killed numerous people and damaged a lot physically and mentally. But, on the other hand, they became realizing national consciousness and inconsistency of Sung Confucianism(性理學) ruling order as well as having interests in change of international situation. Sagye Kim Jang-saeng aspired to set up a new political system of Cho-seon in the pursuit of the Rye. He tried to restore the ethical order of family through clan rules, and to realize a generous society with salute by establishing a social order in those days. He particularly tried to hamonize the universality and peculiality of Rye and in so doing it, he attempted to combine unity the individual or private with the public sides of Ryes. He dreamt of a society which could had been possibly governed by the in-ui(仁 義), the Rye and the spirit for defending the fartherland. Our most important tasks at a time when we should endeavor to create a better future for our nation in twenty-firth century, are to safeguard national security, enhance prosperity, and accomplish reunification through the integration of various elements of national power. The political philosophy of 'hongikingan' have traditionally played a central role in shaping the Korean people's psyche and national conciousness. About the incessant invations by the neighboring countries from both sides, we have to overcome the national trials and hardships thanks to the spirit for defending the fartherland and overcoming every time.

17세기 조선에서 발생하였던 45년 간의 전란은 조선사회의 기저부를 근본부터 흔들어 놓 았다. 당시는 사회질서를 회복하기 위하여 백성들의 윤리의식을 재건해야만 하였다. 사계 김장생은 가례의 보급을 통해 조선사회의 질서를 재건하고, 예학(禮學)을 시대정신으 로 탄생시켰다. 김장생의 예학은 실천적 학문이다. 그리고 그의 예학은 예(禮)를 바탕으로 하 여 호국(護國)의 정신과 행동으로 향해간다. 김장생과 그의 문인들은 조선의 예학을 정립하면서 호국정신과 민본의 대의로 살아갔 다. 그들을 통하여 조선의 예학은 발전하였으며, 더불어서 호국정신이라는 시대정신이 조선사회를 관통하며, 오늘날까지 이어지고 있다. 김장생 이후 400여 년의 시간이 흐르면서 동아시아의 역사는 또 다시 격랑 속으로 빨 려들어가고 있다. 점점 더 위험해지는 한반도의 안보상황에도 불구하고 우리나라의 현 실은 그렇게 녹록하지 않다. 많은 국민들은 굳건한 국가안보 속에서 안정적인 삶과 번영하는 대한민국을 원하고 있 다. 이를 위해서는 본질로 돌아가야 한다. 즉 더불어서 인간에게 유익하라는 홍익인간 정신 그리고 선비정신, 이웃사촌과 같은 공동체 정신을 바탕으로 모든 국민들이 올바른 국가관을 가질 수 있도록 유 도해야 한다. 공동체 정신과 호국정신을 통합하여 새로운 시대정신으로 창조해야 할 국가적 과제가 있는 것이다.
