The attitude of the Roman Catholic Church toward the tournament reflected the evolution of its form from the mêlée to the joust. In the twelfth century the Church stigmatized the mêlée as a detestable fair because there were lots of not only the death of men but also the trade of ransoms and horses and arms. From the thirteenth century the Church began to reveal signs of tolerance toward the joust in which players experienced the decreasing possibility to be wounded and die. From the fourteenth century the tournament was changed into the object of indifference owing to the numerical preponderance of joust and the ultimate eclipse of crusade passions. However, it is thought that the fundamental factor to result in the evolution consisted less in the ecclesiastical criticisms than in the structural transformation of French nobility around the year 1200.

마상창시합에 대한 로마 교회의 태도는 집단난투에서 개별대결로 시합 형태의 진화를 반영했다. 12세기 교회는 인명 살상뿐 아니라 몸값이며 말이며 무기의 거래를 이유로 집단난투를 “가증스런 시장”이라고 낙인찍었다. 개별대결의 등장과 함께 인명 살상의 위험이 줄어든 13세기에는 시합에 대해 관용을 보이기 시작했다. 14세기 들어서는 개별대결의 수적 압도와 십자군 열기의 퇴조로 말미암아 시합에 대해 무관심으로 바뀌었다. 그러나 시합 형태의 이러한 진화는 교회의 비판보다는 1200년을 전후한 시기 프랑스 귀족 사회의 구조적 변동에 기인한 것으로 생각된다.
