This text aims to introduce to the readers some representations of the “East Asia” found in Portuguese literature from the sixteenth century – as a result of new Portuguese international relationships established during the Age of Discovery – until the mid-twentieth century. We try to contemplate the several forms of literary writing, including fiction prose and poetry, journalistic articles and chronicles of travel. Once the "East Asia" as known in Euro-American texts is a region with unclear geographical limits, we defined it here as “East Asia” representations related to China, Japan, Korea, India, Thailand and other Southeast Asian civilizations.

이 글은 대항해시대와 함께 포르투갈 사람에 의해 정치-경제적으로 새로운 관계들이 나타나기 시작한 16세기부터 우리 시대와 매우 가까운 20세기 중반까지의 포르투갈 문학 속에서의 극동아시아에 대해 독자들에게 설명을 하려고 한다. 산문, 시, 신문 기사, 기행문 등을 포함한 다양한 형태의 문학들을 살펴보려고 시도했다. 유럽-미국에서 출판된 책에서 알 수 있듯이 “동양”은 모호한 경계를 가진 지역이기 때문에 여기서는 중국, 일본, 한국, 인도, 태국과 함께 다른 동남아시아 문명의 사람들과 관련된 이미지를 “극동아시아“ 부분으로 정의내리기로 한다.
