This study traces the way scholars and artists have used the characteristics of myths to make a fetish of the story of Paraguaçu, the Brazilian indigenous woman. She was baptized receiving the name Catarina do Brasil, and married to Portuguese sailor Diogo Álvares Correia, also known as Caramuru. They became the first Brazilian Christian family and played an important role in the Portuguese colonialization of Brazil. Now Paraguaçu has become an icon. She is considered as symbolic mother of the Brazilian people and, indeed, usually called ‘Mother of Brazil’. By presenting an analysis of how the state discourses of nation-building have affected the construction of motherhood, this study provides an overview and critique of writings on Paraguaçu through which culturally stereotyped motherhood has been established.

Este trabalho apresenta a forma como os estudiosos e artistas usaram características do mito para fazer um fetiche da história da indígena brasileira Paraguaçu. Esta foi batizada com o nome de Catarina do Brasil, e se casou com o navegador português Diogo Álvares Correia, também conhecido como Caramuru. Eles formaram a primeira família cristã do Brasil e desempenharam um papel importante na colonização da América portuguesa. Hoje Paraguaçu virou ícone. Ela é considerada como a mãe simbólica do povo brasileiro e, de fato, geralmente chamada de "Mãe do Brasil". Dando atenção à análise de como o discurso da nação tem afetado a construção da maternidade, este trabalho fornece uma visão geral e crítica dos textos sobre Paraguaçu, através dos quais a maternidade culturalmente estereotipada tem se constituído.
