This thesis is to explore feasibilities to utilize literature for reading and writing framework in writing classes for Science and Engineering students and to propose actual application methods. Currently, it has been actively discussed to offer a different writing class per different group, especially, Science and Engineering student group because they used to be classified as a special group and special writing classes as a part of their major study programs have been offered. However, it started to be raised there are limitations to offer separate writing classes only for Science and Engineering students and alternatives should be explored. Especially, it is in question whether professors specialized in writing should be responsible for delivering major subject related contents such as ‘laboratory test report writing’, ‘manual instruction writing’, ‘presentation material and presentation’ and others at the writing classes for Science and Engineering students. Also, most writing classes are freshmen curriculum and it’s also in question whether above contents are appropriate for freshmen. Therefore, this thesis is to propose specific alternative writing classes for Science and Engineering freshmen, as a part of Liberal Arts rather than major study curriculum. First, it will propose classes focusing on improving students’ critical thinking capability by considering critical ‘reading - writing’ module. Secondly, it will consider to utilize literature in critical reading as reading text material. ‘Reasons based Theory’ from literature is very similar to ‘Critical Reading’ and both require similar way of thinking process. Also, at the writing classes under Liberal Arts curriculum, literature is major representative of Humanities which is usually requested to be synchronized with Liberal Arts. Finally, it will propose detailed processes to design critical ‘reading - writing’ classes based on literature, from selecting literature to delivering actual writing courses.

본 논문은 이공계 글쓰기 수업에서 읽기-쓰기 모형을 적용하는 데 있어 문학 활용의 가능성을 모색하고, 실제 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현재 대학 글쓰기에서 논의가 되고 있는 계열별 글쓰기에서 이공계열은 분리의 중심에 서 있다. 그들을 특수 학습자로 설정하고 전공 글쓰기 과정을 적용하는 사례가 많기 때문이다. 그러나 최근에는 이공계의 글쓰기 분리 수업의 한계가 제기되면서 새로운 대안을 모색하게 되었다. 이공계 글쓰기 수업에서 이루어지는 ‘실험 보고서 쓰기, 제품 설명서 쓰기, 프리젠테이션 작성 및 발표’ 등이 과연 글쓰기 교수자가 담당해야 하는 부분인가라는 점과, 대부분 글쓰기 수업은 1학년에 개설되는데 그 수준에서 다룰 만한 내용인가라는 점 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문은 이공계 글쓰기 수업을 1학년 교양의 한 과목으로 간주하고, 구체적 대안을 마련해 보고자 한다. 첫 번째로 비판적 사고력 향상을 글쓰기 수업의 목적으로 두고, 그것을 위한 수업 모형으로 비판적 읽기-쓰기 모형을 제안했다. 두 번째는 비판적 읽기를 위한 읽기 텍스트로 문학의 가능성을 모색했다. 문학은 그 특수성로 인해 고도의 사고과정을 요구한다는 점이 비판적 읽기-쓰기를 위한 자료로 적절하다. 또한, 인문학과의 융합을 중요시하는 교양수업으로서의 글쓰기에서 문학은 인문학의 대표적 장르라는 점도 빼놓을 수 없다. 마지막으로 문학을 제재로 비판적 읽기-쓰기를 위한 작품 선택부터 쓰기 과정까지의 기본 원칙을 제시하고 실제 작품으로 예시를 들었다.
