After establishing itself in North Korea the regime aimed to construct Socialist State. Therefore, the ideology the regime began with was pure Leninism. Although the base level of North Korean revolution was in the nationalism and they rebelled against the feudal democracies, they couldn’t come closer to traditional nationalism as long as they follow socialist propaganda. After the revolution Socialist like Lenin suppressed the political traditional nationalist and forced them to leave the streets. But the principal ideas that were carefully stressed were the traditional socialist ones. These socialist ideals discriminated against the nationalist ideals and emerged as the foundation of the new state. In particular in order to theoretically justify the reunification of the fatherland, they advocated rejecting Marxist-Leninist ideals in favor of an authentic North Korean socialist nationalist brand new state. Initially the North Korean Socialist state focused on the common language and race of the nation’s people to maintain its power and control. However, due to the poor economy the North Korean state has begun focusing more on practical ideology in hopes of improving the economy and maintaining its rule. The North Korean government rejected the old and failing socialist and nationalist ideals and is presenting a new re-engineered political system in order to attract both South Koreans and North Koreas to form one fatherland under a unified new socialist government. With this new sophisticated system of government North Korea is trying to attract nationalist gaining their favor by advertising its improved socialist state. However, in reality this new system is not attracting adherents form North or South Korea. The North Korean Regime claims that they have this new system of socialism; in actuality though it is under the same unchanged totalitarian government. There is a positive side of North Korean nationalism and the emphasis on Korean homogeneity; because it promotes the reunification of the Koreas. However, there is a huge division of half a century between North and South Korea. During this time the ideals of nationalism in North and South Korea developed completely different philosophies even though both mutually held strong patriotism and pride in their race.

북한은 정권수립 후 사회주의 건설을 목표로 하였다. 따라서 맑스-레닌주의가 지도 이념이 되었다. 비록 반제반봉건민주주의혁명을 내세웠기 때문에 민족주의가 기저에 놓여 있었으나, 사회주의 노선을 따르는 한 전통적 민족주의와는 거리를 둘 수밖에 없었다. 하지만 주체사상이 조심스럽게 대두되면서 전통적 사회주의와는 차별이 강조되면서 민족주의가 등장할 토대가 마련되었다. 특히, 조국통일을 이론적으로 정당화시키기 위해서는 전통적 맑스-레닌주의에서 주장하는 민족주의와는 결별하기 시작했다. 경제적 공통성보다는 언어나 핏줄을 강조하는 모습을 보인 북한의 민족주의는 사회주의권이 붕괴되기 시작하자 실천이데올로기로 격상되었다. 붕괴되는 기존사회주의와 차별성을 강조하기 위해서 민족주의를 본격적으로 재정립시켰으며, 조국통일에 있어서 우위를 점하기 위해서도 민족주의를 수령의 영도체계와 결합시켰다. 이제 북한에게 민족주의는 체제유지를 위해 버팀목으로 작용하고 있으며, 이론적 재정립과 정교화도 진행되었다. 하지만 이것이 북한 체제의 변화를 의미한다고 볼 수는 없다. 수령 중심의 지배구조를 민족주의에 그대로 투영되었기 때문이다. 다만, 통일 논의에 있어서 민족주의의 강조는 남북한의 동질성을 강조하는 역할을 할 수 있기 때문에 긍정적인 면이 많다. 그러나 남한의 민족주의와는 그 이론적 기반을 달리한다. 반세기가 넘도록 지속되어온 분단체제에서 남과 북이 같은 민족주의를 공유할 수는 없는 일이다.
