This study attempted to discuss the linguistic modernity of the cultural region using Chinese character centering on two pivotal factors “Christianity” and “translation.” The research themes “cultural region of Chinese character,” “Christianity,” and “translation” are too broad to be handled in a single dissertation, but this paper attempted to sketch the modernity of East Asia from a new perspective by discussing the contact point of the three themes. For this, first all, we examined the characteristics of the linguistic modernity of the cultural region using Chinese character in East Asia, distinguished from those in Europe. Next, the roles of Chinese character and writing were examined in missionaries’ theories of translation and their translation of Christian literature through the history of Christian mission in modern East Asia. From this study was found that the urgency of modern times and the necessity of enlightenment demanded prompt translation into Chinese character and writing in East Asia, and modern ideas were translated at a fast rate using the high word formation ability of Chinese character. Such a discussion on “the cultural region of Chinese character,” “Christianity,” and “translation” provides a clue to the “other epistemology” of modern East Asia. That is, three points as follows will raise new research themes and shed light on the diversity and dynamism of modern East Asia: 1) reevaluation of translation as a means of recognizing others; 2) how to understand Chinese character as “other” in Korea and Japan; and 3) how to evaluate cultural heritages left in modern East Asia by foreigner missionaries as “others.”

본고에서는 한자문화권의 언어적 근대 문제를 “기독교”와 “번역”이라는 두 가지 축을 가지고 해명하 고자 했다. “한자문화권” “기독교” “번역”이라는 연구주제는 한 편의 논문에서 다루기에는 방대한 내 용이지만, 본고에서는 먼저 이 세 가지 연구주제가 만나는 접점에 대해 이야기 하면서 새로운 시각으 로 동아시아의 근대를 규명하는 시론으로 삼고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 유럽과 다른 동아시아, 한자문화권의 언어적 근대가 가지는 특성이 무엇인지 살펴보 았다. 다음으로 근대 동아시아의 기독교 선교 역사를 통해 선교사들의 번역론과 기독교 문헌 번역에 서 한자, 한문의 역할을 검토하였다. 이를 통해 근대라는 시대의 급박함과 계몽의 필요성이 동아시아 에서 한자와 한문을 활용한 빠른 번역을 요구하였고, 한자의 조어력(造語力)을 활용하여 근대 사상 번 역이 빠른 속도로 이루어졌음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 “한자문화권” “기독교” “번역”에 관한 논의는 근대 동아시아의 타자 인식론을 위한 실마리를 제공한다. 즉 타자를 인식하는 수단으로 번역을 재평가하고, 한자라는 타자가 한국과 일본에서 어떻 게 규정될 수 있는지, 나아가 외국인 선교사라는 타자에 의해 근대 동아시아에 남겨진 문화유산을 어 떻게 평가해야 하는지, 새로운 연구주제를 환기시키고, 근대 동아시아의 다양성과 역동성을 밝혀줄 것이다.
