This document covers the multiple Japanese versions of “Night on the Galactic Railroad” currently available in Japan, the different Korean translations of these books available in Korea, and the problems regarding the publishing of said translations. The Japanese versions of “Night on the Galactic Railroad” published by major Japanese publishers state what type of source text among the rough draft, the final draft, and the edited versions that they are based on. It helps readers easily understand that the said book doesn’t have only one story but has multiple versions. Of the 16 different Korean translations of “Night on the Galactic Railroad”, the information that the story has more than one version is mentioned in only one translation, published by Sunlight and Woodcutter in 2012. However, the other translations have different plots or endings depending on by whom they were translated or by which company they were published.. A reader-oriented Korean translation of “Night on the Galactic Railroad” should provide background information on the multiple versions currently available on the market. It is also required that a literary translator review research papers to help readers understand the literary work most accurately, just as the translator of the Sunlight and Woodcutter version did.

본고에서는 일본에서 복수의 『은하철도의 밤』이 출판된 현황과 여러 종류의 일한번역본『은하철 도의 밤』의 출판 현황과 문제점을 고찰해 보았다. 일본 출판사가 출판한 『은하철도의 밤』은 초기형, 최종형, 합성본문 중 어느 원고형태를 바탕으로 했는지를 밝히고 있어서 독자들이 초기형과 최종형, 그리고 합성본문은 각각 『은하철도의 밤』이며 ‘하나의 이야기’가 아니고 ‘다수의 번전을 갖는 이야기’라는 사실을 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 일한번역본 『은하철도의 밤』출판현황을 살펴본 결과 『은하철도의 밤』이 ‘하나의 이야기’가 아니 고 ‘다수의 번전을 갖는 이야기’라는 사실을 알 수 있는 것은 16권의 역서 중에 1권(햇살과 나무꾼역, 2012) 뿐이다. 그렇지만 무엇을 판본으로 했는지를 밝히지 않은 일한 번역본 『은하철도의 밤』경우 도 어느 출판사에서 출판 되었는가 번역자가 누구인가에 따라 이야기의 세부구성이이나 결말부분이 다른 이야기가 출판되었다. 독자를 염두에 둔 출판이라면 다양한 버전을 가진 『은하철도의 밤』이라는 작품이 시장에 나돌게 된 배경 설명이 필요하다고 본다. 또한 문학번역작품을 번역할 경우는 번역자는 햇살과 나무꾼(2012)의 번역자처럼 연구논문 검토를 통해 작품의 세계를 정확히 독자들에게 전달하려는 의식이 필요하다고 여겨진다.
