程度副詞には後接する成分の数量性を限定する機能がある。その程度副詞の表す数量性─つまり解釈─は多岐にわたるのであるが、本稿はその解釈の違いを生じさせる要因は何かについて調べたものである。調査の結果、以下のような結論を導くこととなった。主体の数量･･･意志性のない自動詞と共起し、主体である名詞に数量的な広がりが想定できる場合。対象の数量･･･他動詞と共起し、対象である名詞に数量的な広がりが想定できる場合。動きの量･･･意志性のない動詞と共起し、主体である名詞に数量的な広がりが想定できない場合。他動詞と共起し、対象である名詞に数量的な広がりが想定できない場合。意志性のある自動詞と共起した場合。また、先行研究でたびたび論じられる｢度数｣を表す用法については、用例の絶対数が少なく、前後の文脈の影響を受けることから、例外的･複次的な用法であるとした。
