I will examine these words/phrases in the following order 「登時・當下・登下」. ‘‘Touji (登時)’’ was prevalent from the early period in Japan. We can find this word in classic Japanese dictionaries, in pre-modern and modern Chinese dictionaries, and in Kanji dictionaries of the Meiji Period. It was relatively well-known by Japanese speakers, and basically carried the meaning ‘‘immediately’’. However, it appears that it underwent a transformation to become the ‘‘Topic conversion’’ marker - meaning ‘‘then’’, under the influences of the pre- modern ‘‘Chinese Linguistic study. ‘‘Touka (當下)’’ is essentially the same as ‘‘touji(當時)’’, although it takes on a different meaning depending upon its pronunciation. When you say ‘‘Tou(當)’’ using the First Tone (一声/Yisheng), the meaning is ‘‘then’ ’; but when you use the Fourth Tone (四声/Sisheng), the meaning becomes ‘‘immediately’’. The meaning of ‘‘touka(登下)’’ in Japan, (which was quite novel even in China) came to be ‘‘then’’ under the influences of ‘‘Chinese Linguistic study (唐話学) ’’. Compared with ‘‘touji(登時)’’, ‘‘touka(當下)’’ has been used in various ways. The usage of ‘‘touka(當下)’’ is an outstanding example of difference between China and Japan. As this paper examines in detail the index of ‘‘Kango-daijiten『漢語大詞典』’’, the differences has no relevance to the ‘‘Topic conversion’’, and it is unclear why ‘‘touka(登下)’’ in the Japanese language had been used with the meaning ‘‘then’’. However, it might be considered that Japanese people used it as the ‘‘Topic conversion’’, because they noted the similarities between ‘‘touji(當時)’’ and ‘‘touka(當下)’’.
