Independent project company, restriction on recourse, and lender's control to the cash flow are the key elements of project finance. Project Finance was introduced to Korea in the middle of 1990s with the beginning of PPI (Private Participation in Infrastructure or PPP; Public-Private Partnership). Around 2001, after 1997 financial crisis, project finance was applied to real estate development project. Project finance, especially large project, is an attractive research subject from the academic, managerial, and pedagogical perspective(Esty, 2004). Capital structure theory and corporate governance theory could be refined and expanded through the research on project finance. And project finance is the very cost efficient pedagogical subject to the business education. This paper analyzes the research trend on project finance in Korea. Using 11 database, I find 92 papers published in benefit-accredited journals classified by NRF (National Research Foundation of Korea). First, more than half of the papers is on the journal regarding law, community development, and geography. Economics and business journal is not the main to the research on project finance. It is very anomalous situation considering project finance is the subject related to the raising and financing funds. Second, research activity was dominated by professors who majored in law and real estate among 42 active researchers. I picked out 42 active researchers from the total 121 researchers according to the research index. Researchers who is with research index greater than 1.000 and engaged in more than two papers were classified into the active researcher. Third, papers with “real estate” and “PPI” as key word account for about 50% of the total 92 papers. We can reconfirm the fact that project finance was introduced with the start of PPI and briskly used to real estate development projects.

프로젝트 파이낸스는 독립 사업시행법인을 차주로 하고 대주는, 사업주에 대한 소구권이 제한된 조건 하에 서, 현금흐름에 대한 상당한 통제권을 보유하는 자금조달 및 지원을 의미한다. 1990년대 중반 민간투자사 업 개시와 함께 국내에 도입되었고, 2001년 이후 부동산개발사업에 적극적으로 활용되기 시작하였다. 프로 젝트 파이낸스는 자본구조, 지배구조 및 위험관리 등 재무이론 연구에 있어서 매력적인 주제임에도 불구하 고 자료수집 곤란 등의 사유로 관련 연구가 활발하게 이루어지지 않고 있다. 계속적인 활용도 증가추세에 있으므로 실무적 중요성 또한 증대되고 있으며, 기업경영 및 상업교육 관련 효율적인 교육주제이므로 교육 적 관심도 필요하다. 본 연구는 1994년부터 2013년까지 20년 동안 한국연구재단 등재학술지에 게재된 연구논문 92편을 대상으 로 국내 프로젝트 파이낸스 연구동향을 분석하였다. 법학, 지역개발학 및 지리학 학술지에 게재된 논문이 과반을 넘고, 경영학 및 경제학 학술지를 통한 연구활동은 매우 빈약한 상황이다. 활동적 연구자도 법학 및 부동산학을 전공한 교수인 연구자에 집중되어 있음을 확인하였다. 재무적 관점에서 사전적 성립요건과 사후적 특성을 구분한 프로젝트 파이낸스의 개념 정립에 대한 연구가 우선적으로 필요하다. 본 연구를 통해 재무, 회계등 경영학 전공 연구자들의 주의를 환기시키고, 향후 의미 있는 연구의 길라잡이가 될 수 있기를 기대한다.
