Geo heritages are important legacies that record the evolutionary history of the earth as well as nature. It is imperative that geo heritages are protected in order to search for ways in which humans and nature can coexist while understanding the current state of the natural world. The geoparks that have emerged from such backgrounds are widely recognized to play a role for fulfilling the responsibility of humans. Geoparks that have developed from Europe and China have recently become more known in Japan. The basic research that clarifies the characteristics of the geopark system is essential for spreading the term of geoparks and also for its promotion. The purpose of this paper is to organize the process starting from the protection of geo heritages to the conceptualization of geoparks, and understand the fundamental matters regarding geoparks. Specifically, the historical transitions as well as systems of geoparks were sorted. Then the essence of geoparks and the characteristics of its system were examined by comparing geoparks with existing similar systems. As a result, the value of geoparks in the future was clarified from the perspective of nature conservation and the construction of a society where humans and nature can coexist harmoniously.

大地の遺産は重要な自然遺産として、地球や自然界の進化の歴史を記録している。自然界の現状を知りながら、人間と自然が共生していく道を探るには大地の遺産を保護することが急務である。こうした背景の中で生まれたジオパークはこの人類全体の共同責任を達成するための一翼を担うことができると広く認識されつつある。欧州や中国から発展してきたジオパークは近年日本国内においても盛り上がっている。ジオパークの言葉を浸透させ、ジオパークを推進していくために、ジオパーク制度の特徴を明確にする必要がある。　本稿では大地の遺産の保護からジオパーク構想に至るまでの経緯などを整理し、ジオパークに関する基礎的事項についてまとめ、ジオパークと既存の類似制度との比較によって、ジオパークの本質と制度の特徴を明らかにした。結果としては、Geopark言葉自体と定義においては、GGNと国ごとの考え方の違いが見られる。つまり、日本は教育とジオツーリズム、中国はツーリズムに重点を置くことがわかった。それに加え、ジオパークはジオツーリズムを通じて「持続可能な社会・経済発展」を標榜すること、仕組みに大地の遺産と関わる地域住民の役割が重要であること、地域に対しては、受け入れやすい仕組みであること、ジオパークは質と信用が高い制度を目指している特徴を明らかにした。
