Although many plant names recorded in the traditional cultures were written in chinese letter, until now the traditional cultures were understood without the correct taxonomic identities of plant names. Therefore, there were some mistakes in the understanding of the traditional cultures. In this study, to address the needs to clarify the taxonomic identities of plants for the re-understand the traditional cultures, the taxonomic identity of su-yoo was clarified and the traditional culture related to san-su-yoo were re-understood based on the clarified concept of san-su-yoo. The chineses letter ‘su-yoo’ written in the old books was proved to mean two species; one is san-su-yoo in the Samkuyusa, and the other is o-su-yoo in the Wang Wei’s poetry, Double Ninth, Missing My Shandong Brothers.

전통문화에 등장하는 각종 식물들의 경우 대부분 한자(漢字)로 기록되어 있으나, 이 들의 실체에 대한 이해가 없이 문화를 해석하고 있어, 일정 부분 전통문화 해석에 있 어 오류가 발생하기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 고전 문헌에 나오는 수유(茱萸)의 실체를 파악함으로써 전통문화를 달리 해석할 수 있는 사례를 보여주고, 전통문화 이해를 위해서는 식물의 분류학적 실체 규명이 필요함을 주장하고자 하였다. 지금까지 산수 유로 번역되는 수유는 크게 산수유(山茱萸)와 오수유(吳茱萸)로 번역될 수 있음을 살 펴보았고, 왕유가 지은 ｢구월구일억산동형제(九月九日憶山東兄弟)｣에 나오는 수유 는 산수유가 아니라 오수유일 가능성이 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 국내에서 수유(茱萸)로 기록된 식물을 번역할 때에는 문맥의 상황에 따라야 할 것이다.
