This thesis is aimed to know how people think of their breadwinner, family members and family ideology through Simbongsa and his family in Simcheongjeon. We will review the way the story show how Simbongsa and his family rebuild their disbanded family to us. Simbongsa in Simcheongjeon is far from the traditional vision of a breadwinner, but he is served by his wife and child just because he is the head of the family. Simbongsa’s authority as the head of his family seems very firm because Ms. Gwak and Simcheong―his wife and his daughter―are willing to sacrifice themselves for their head and worry about him even after their death. The story is caricaturing him by showing his disability and sexual desire, which make us feel sympathy for Simbongsa rather than blame the incompetent and selfish breadwinner. Not only does the sympathy encourage Simbongsa to rebuild his family but also the story result in get him on a better social status to be an authoritative breadwinner by getting married to Ms. Ahn. Luckily, Simbongsa solves the family problem with any decising-making or efforts. It is just done by a leap in the story which represents conservative family ideology. The story shows people have in mind that the authority of their breadwinners could be revived and kept alive, who neither blame nor make any realistic counter-offer to the heads of their family―even though the incompetent breadwinner cannot stand still in the rapidly changing world teased by agitation of status system and capitalism. It also tells us that incompetent breadwinners cannot protect their family from any crises. Simcheongjeon is a story about paradox of the family system by showing that self-sacrifice of family members for their breadwinner is the only way to survival although the head of their family doensn’t deserve the authority physically and ethically.

본고는 <심청전>의 심봉사를 중심으로 가장, 가족구성원, 가족이데 올로기의 문제에 대한 향유층의 인식을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 심봉사는 가장으로서 그 어떤 자질도 갖추지 못하였고, 또 무능력과 성적 욕망을 여과없이 드러내면서 빈약한 내면을 노출시킨다. 이는 동 정을 유도하여 이야기가 가장을 재건하도록 추동하고, 신분상승과 안씨 와의 혼인이라는 서사의 귀결을 통해서 권위있는 가장을 호명한다. 비약적 결말로 보수적 가족이데올로기가 재현되는 과정에서 심학규 는 그 어떠한 역할도 하지 않지만, 문제가 모두 해결되고 자신의 신분도 수직 상승을 이룬다. 이러한 결말은 <심청전>이 신분제의 동요와 자본 의 대두로 변화하는 시기에 무기력한 가장에 대한 신랄한 비판도 현실 적인 대안도 제시하지 못한다는 것을 보여주며, 오히려 막연히 가부장 의 권위가 회복되고 유지되기를 바라는 향유층의 내면화된 이념성을 확 인시켜 준다. 또한 역설적으로 격동기에 적응하지 못한 무능한 가장을 더 이상 위기의 가정을 견고하게 지켜낼 수 있는 주체로 인식하고 있지 않다는 것을 보여준다. <심청전>은 책임을 다 하지 못한 가장일지라도 가족구성원에게는 관념적으로 권위가 견고하게 존속되며, 그 구성원들은 가장을 위한 자 기 소진이 유일한 생존전략일 수밖에 없다는 점에서 가족제도의 모순을 적나라하게 드러내는 작품이라 할 수 있다. <심청전>이 보여주는 가족 이데올로기의 문학적 형상화는 충족된 결론과 달리 공고한 이념적 자장 속에서 가족구성원의 새로운 지위와 역할을 제시하지 못했다.
