This article is concerned with the characteristics and collecting methods of oral data of elite groups, written with my sincere hope that it can used as a manual for researchers who are just about to begin collecting such data. Recently, many prestigious institutions such as the National Archives of Korea, the National Institute of Korean History, and the Academy of Korean Studies have been actively engaged in collecting the oral data of typical elite groups of Korean society. Unfortunately, however, there are almost no Korean language academic methodological sources, which could guide this collecting process. Therefore, this article is focused on introducing discussions related to the interviewing of elite groups in foreign academia, with particular emphasis on American oral history scholarship, which has led the academic discussion on this issue. I have also included my own impressions and experiences of trial and error in the course of collecting oral data of elite groups. The article covers several matters comprehensively, including the use of the term ‘elite interviewing’ which is not an established term in Korean academia, the merits and demerits of the oral data of elite groups, the desire of elite interviewees to control or dominate the interview unlike non-elite interviewees, and the tendency of the elite to use their oral data as mere tools for preserving records of their political or social career.

이 글은 엘리트 구술자료의 성격과 수집방안에 대한 시론적인 글이다. 또한 이 글은 이제 막 엘리트 구술자료 수집을 시작하려는 연구자들이 일종의 매뉴얼로 참조할 수 있 길 기대하는 마음으로 작성되었다. 최근 한국에서는 국가기록원, 국사편찬위원회, 한국학 중앙연구원 등을 중심으로 기존 한국사회의 대표적 엘리트 집단에 대한 구술자료 수집활 동이 활발하게 진행 중이다. 반면에 아직 국내학계에는 이 같은 엘리트 구술자료 수집의 길잡이 역할을 해줄 수 있는 학술논저가 거의 전무한 형편이다. 이에 이 글은 엘리트 구 술자료 수집의 중요성을 일찌감치 통찰하고, 그를 선도해온 해외 학계(특히 미국 구술사 학계)의 엘리트 구술관련 논의를 충실하게 소개함과 동시에, 필자 개인이 엘리트 구술자 료 수집 과정에서 느꼈던 소회와 시행착오를 글 속에 녹아내기 위해 노력했다. 이 글은 현재 한국학계에서 학술용어로 정착되어 있지 않은 ‘엘리트 구술’이라는 용어의 사용 가 능성으로부터 시작하여, 엘리트 구술의 장점과 단점, 그리고 비엘리트 구술과는 달리 인 터뷰를 통제하거나 지배하고자 하는 엘리트들의 욕구, 구술사업을 자기 정치경력이나 사 회경력 기록의 보존수단으로만 활용하려는 엘리트들의 경향성에 맞서 적절히 구술사료를 수집하는 방안에 대해 총체적으로 접근한다.
