The purpose of the present study is to explore the research on character strengths of popular students. Character strengths, as kinds of positive traits, are known to enhance happiness and optimal functioning. That can mean elements to achieve a successful peer relationship in elementary schools. Understanding and perceiving their own character strengths, Students can adjust to school life more easily. Also, they can develop and enhance their inner values and virtues. The findings of this study were as follows. First, elementary students had these five highest scored strengths; love, gratitude, hope, modesty, kindness. Second, the popular elementary students scored highest in the following five strengths; love, gratitude, hope, modesty, kindness. Third, there were the significant differences of character strengths between the popular and unpopular upper-grade elementary students, and the popular upper-grade elementary male students had significantly higher citizenship compared to the unpopular upper grade elementary male students. The popular upper-grade elementary female students had significantly higher self- regulation compared to the unpopular upper-grade elementary female students.

본 연구는 긍정심리학을 기반으로 한 24개의 성격 강점 중, 우리나라 초등학교 고학년 아동 들이 일반적으로 보이는 대표적 성격 강점이 무엇인지 알아보고, 학교에서 잘 적응하여 또래 의 지지를 받고 있다고 판단되는 인기아동의 성격 강점의 특성이 어떠한지 살펴보고자 하였 다. 연구 결과 우리나라의 초등학교 고학년 아동들은 사랑, 감사, 희망, 겸손 등의 성격강점 이 높았으며, 성별에 따라 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 인기아 들의 성격강점을 분석한 결과, 사랑과 희망, 감사, 겸손 등이 대표적 성격 강점으로 나타났으 며, 친절과 겸손, 심미안을 제외한 나머지 21개 강점에서 성별에 따른 차이가 나타나지 않았 다. 마지막으로 아동의 또래 지위에 따라 구분한 인기아 집단과 비 인기아 집단의 성격 강점 에 대해 비교 분석 한 결과, 인기아가 비인기아에 비해 전체적인 성격강점 수준이 더 높았으 며, 남학생의 경우 시민의식, 여학생의 경우에는 자기조절에서 비인기아 집단과 가장 큰 차 이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로, 연구결과에 따른 시사점과 논의 및 제언을 제시하였다.
