The problem of experiencing “boredom” lies as psychic sediment deeply at thebottom of people’s mental reservoir. The potential influence of boredom becomesmore acute when we consider its educational efficacies upon the process ofadolescent identity development. This study aims at discovering the anatomy ofboredom from both the psychological and socio‐cultural processes of individuation. While probing deeply into the psychic structure of boredom, we will alsoinvestigate the nature and causative factors of boredom in order to delineatepossible educational remedies to resolve the challenges it brings to the educationalarena of everyday practice. When the problem of boredom is ignored, horrendousconsequences can ensue, such as the massacre of Va. Tech committed by SeungHee Cho. In trying to cope with boredom, many young people incorporatedifferent leisure activities. This is one of ways by which young people seeks toexperiment with their identity. Using Peter Berger’s theoretical framework ofsocialization, this study will also engage in a critical analysis of how the processesof socialization affect the construction of adolescent identity formation. In sodoing, the expectancy theory of motivation is also brought to our attention as away to investigate the correlation between motivation and continuous willingnessto develop one’s sense of identity among adolescence.

‘지루함’은 사람들의 사고와 생활 속 깊은 곳에 앙금처럼 깔려있다. 특별히 ‘지루함’이 청소년들의 정신세계와 자아형성에 미치는 영향은 더 이상 묵인할 수 없는 교육적과제이다. 본 연구는 ‘지루함’의 정체와 ‘지루함’을 유발하는 요소들, ‘지루함’의 심리적그리고 사회문화적 구조 및 영적 성장에 미치는 영향력에 대해 연구 분석하여 ‘지루함’을 창작적으로 대처할 수 있는 기독교 교육적인 해결책들을 제시하고자 한다. ‘영구적지루함’이 장기간 방치될 때 그리고 ‘지루함’과의 끝없는 대면에서 긍정적이며 창의적인해결책을 제시하지 못할 때, 우리는 미국과 한국을 깜짝 놀라게 했던 Virginia Tech대학의 조승희군의 총기학살 같은 끔찍한 사건을 경험하게 된다. ‘지루함’과의 끝없는 씨름에서 청소년들은 나름대로 여러 부류의 여가활동을 도입하게 되는데, 여가 활동을 선택하는 동기와 참여과정 중에 유발되는 경험들은 청소년 자신들이 발견하려고 하는 자아상을 추구하며 실험하는 중요한 탐구과정이다. 이런 과정 중에 피할 수 없는 단계가Peter Berger 가 제시했던 3단계의 사회동화 과정이다. 사회가 제시하는 가치관과 기대성을 습득해 가는 과정 또한 교육적으로 심각한 책임을 부각시키므로, 본 연구는 이러한 ‘지루함’이 제시하는 교육적인 이슈들을 ‘동기유발론’과 연관하여 교육적 해결책을모색하기 위해 비교연구 하였다.
