The purpose of this study is to examine the conception and characteristics of multicultural literacy in multicultural society, and to discuss the reading education for improving multicultural literacy. The multicultural literacy can be an ability to understand and express the diversity of the culture as well as reading and writing the text. Thus this study suggested the specific teaching and learning methods focusing on utilization of literary texts, so that the people who will live in multicultural society can understand and think it well. Through the method of this education the majority learners of multicultural society can understand the literature text more deeper and appreciate it better, and they can connect it with the value of their life. Learners, through continuous and systematic reading education, will grow as the preferred literary subjects, and they will contribute to the formation of the desirable community by improving multicultural literacy and communicating in a multicultural society. 이 연구는 다문화 사회에서의 다문화 문식성의 개념과 특성을 살펴보고, 다문화 문식성 향상을 위해 어떻게 독서지도를 해야 하는지에 대해 논의한 글이다. 다문화 문식성은 단순히 글을 읽고 쓰는 능력뿐만 아니라 사회․문화적 맥락에서 문화의 다양성을 이해하고 표현하는 능력이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 다문화 사회를 살아갈 구성원들에게 효율적으로 다문화 사회를 이해하고 성찰할 수 있도록 하기 위해 문학 텍스트 활용을 중심으로 어떻게 반응을 끌어낼 것인가에 대한 구체적인 교수-학습 방법을 제시하였다.
이러한 교육을 통해 다문화 사회의 주류 학습자들은 문학 텍스트를 더 깊이 이해하고 감상하며 나름의 관점을 갖고 사회․문화적 맥락 속에서 자신의 삶의 가치와 연결하게 될 것이다. 학습자들은 지속적이며 체계적인 독서지도를 통해 바람직한 문학 주체로 성장할 것이며, 다문화 문식성을 향상하고 다문화 사회 속에서 소통하면서 바람직한 공동체 형성에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
