This paper aimed to investigate the purposes for which Choi Je-woo founded Donghak(religion created in Korea) and wrote "Yongdamyusa." The purposes of writing "Yongdamyusa" were discussed in two aspects: distribution of Donghak ideology and acknowledgement of enlightenment ideology. Furthermore, the relationship between enlightenment ideology of Donghak and the background ideologies of literature during the enlightenment period were examined. In "Yongdamyusa," Choi Je-woo deliberated the past, present, and future with the viewpoint of the times and fortune. Since human beings were educated through the virtue of the emperors Yao and Shun and complied with the providence of heaven in the past, human beings did not have different mindsets. However, as humans did not comply with the natural law or reflect the natural span of life, they could not help but face declining fortune filled with evil. He wrote "Yongdamyusa" to eliminate all wrong ethics in a corrupt society, establish the new social order to overcome corruption, restore destroyed humanity, and implement the earthly paradise of equality for all with the way of heaven as the key element. "Yongdamyusa" was published in Gasa style in Korean to enable everyone to easily understand Donghak ideology. "Yongdamyusa" is characterized by complete recognition and reflection on the general issues faced by the Koreans at that time even though it was the key scripture of Donghak, Cheondogyo religion along with "Donggyeongdaejeon”(Great Scripture of Donghak). Let's look at an example. Yongdamyusa insisted that anti-feudalistic and anti-aggressive thoughts related to political reform and abolition of the caste system related to social reform. It also supported a variety of enlightenment ideologies including emphasis on people-oriented ideas and civil liberties for reformation of consciousness. Choi Je-woo can be recognized as the first saint leading the spiritual enlightenment of Koreans during the late JoseonPeriod, a period of extreme disorder in political and social aspects, by establishing and strengthening a new ideological and religious foundation.

본 논문은 수운 최제우가 東學을 창도한 목적과 『룡담유』를 창작한 의도를 고찰하는데 주력하였 다. 『룡담유』를 창작한 의도와 관련해서는 동학사상의 유포, 개화사상의 주지 등 두 가지 관점에 서 논의를 전개하였으며, 동학의 개화사상이 개화기 문학의 배경사상과 어떠한 연계선상에 놓여 있는 지에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 『룡담유』를 보면 수운 최제우는 시운관(時運觀)의 틀 속에서 [과거 → 현재→ 미래]를 투시하고, 과거는 세상 사람들이 모두 堯･舜의 교화를 입고 하늘에 순응하는 시절이었기 때문에 各自爲心하지 않 았지만, 현재는 不順天理 不顧天命하여 악질이 세상에 가득 찬 쇠운을 맞게 된 것으로 파악하였다. 그 리고 타락한 사회의 그릇된 제반 윤리를 청산하고 이를 극복할 수 있는 새로운 사회질서를 수립해서, 상실한 인간성을 회복하고 天道를 핵으로 한 만민평등의 지상낙원을 구현하기 위해 『룡담유』를 창작했으며, 누구든지 동학사상을 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 한글 가사체로 편찬하였다. 『룡담유』는 『東經大全』과 함께 동학, 즉 천도교의 핵심 경전임에도 불구하고 창작 당시 우리 민족이 직면한 현실의 제반 문제들을 충분히 인식 반영한 것이 중요한 특징이라 할 수 있다. 예컨대 정 치개혁과 관련해서는 반봉건 반침약적 취지를, 사회개혁과 관련해서는 신분해방과 남녀평등 주장을, 의식개혁과 관련해서는 민본사상과 민권사상을 강조하는 등 여러 가지 개화사상을 표방한 점이 바로 그것이다. 『룡담유』를 개화기 가사의 효시작품으로 상정하게 된 것도 바로 이 때문이라 생각된다 . 따라서 수운 최제우는 새로운 사상적 종교적 기반을 확립하여, 정치적 사회적으로 지극히 문란했던 조선 말기에 우리 민족의 정신적 개화를 이끌어낸 초유의 성자(聖者)라 해도 과언이 아니다.
