Poverty is not a problem of poverty itself, but a social problem which is closely related to the structural contradiction of human greed, social injustice and the oppression of power. In Christianity, what opinion can be expressed to understand and to solve this poverty problem? In order to answer these questions, this paper considered the teaching of sermon on “rich man and Lazarus” preached by Johannes Chrysostom. The universal views that are appeared to his sermons are as followed. First, Christian criticism against greed and transformation of the values of the value system of the Roman Empire, second, the oneness of Christ and the poor, and the virtue of Christian. In addition, it is possible for us to find Chrysostom’s practical effort for poor people. These teachings are provided many insights and suggested important resolution points in the situation of social conflict due to an imbalance of income imbalance.

빈곤은 가난 그 자체의 문제라기보다는, 인간탐욕, 사회적 불의와 구조적 모순, 권력의 탄압, 비리 등과 같은 요인으로 말미암아 심각하게 인식되는 사회적 문 제가 된다. 기독교에서는 빈곤의 문제에 대하여 어떠한 입장을 표명하고 있는 가? 이러한 질문에 답하기 위한 작업으로서 본 논문에서는 요하네스 크리소스 토모스(Ἰωἁννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος,)의 ‘부자와 나사로’의 설교에 나타난 가르 침을 고찰하였다. 그의 설교에 나타난 보편적인 시각은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인 간 탐욕에 대한 기독교적 비판 및 로마제국의 가치관의 변혁, 둘째, 가난한 자 와 그리스도의 동일성, 셋째, 그리스도인의 미덕이다. 또한 크리소스토모스의 가난한 자들을 위한 실천적 노력들을 살펴볼 수 있다. 이러한 가르침은 오늘날 소득불균형으로 인한 사회적 모순이 더 심각해지는 상황에 중요한 해결점을 시 사하며, 많은 통찰력을 제공하고 있다고 판단된다.
