ERP-system is a company-wide information system that has tightly integrated allaspects of a business. It has evolved in the early 1960's from IMCS to theMRP/MRPII and in the 2000's to the ERP and further to the xRP-system. The company'svalue-added process was affected not only by the internal resources but also bythe external resources of the company. Therefore the area that should be processedby ERP- System expanded to the area of the consumer and also to the provider,which allowed the ERP-System to evolve to the xRP-System. This evolution was dueto the changes in ICT, changes in the external environment of enterprise and lastlydue to the requirements of enterprise. The rapid changes of the ICT and businessenvironment will allow the ERP-System to evolve continuously, and in some cases,the changes will be innovative. The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the process of the historicalevolution of the ERP- System and the evolutional direction based on the model ofdevelopment level of an information system. In the Study, we tried to extract thefactors which affect the evolution of ERP-System, and to suggest the direction of theevolution in the future. As the result, we extracted the determinants affecting theevolution of ERP-System as following: area processed and controlled by ERP-System,development level of information technology, degree of application, degree of systemintegration, strategy of vendors, and the requirements of enterprise. This study reached to the following results: The ERP-System will be evolving inthe form that (1) integrates more areas and function processed by system, (2) quicklyresponds to the business environment and to the needs of the user, (3) providesstronger mobility, (4) processes the functions faster, (5) supports the various decision-making situation in the enterprise.

ERP시스템은 1960년대 초반의 재고관리시스템으로부터 출발하여 MRP시스템과 MRPII시스템으로 그리고 2000년대 들어서 ERP시스템과 확장형 ERP시스템으로 진화를 거듭하고 있다. 기업의 부가가치 창출과정이 기 업 내부 자원뿐 만 아니라, 기업 외부의 자원 (수요자 측면의 자원과 공급자 측면의 자원)에 영향을 받는다는 사실을 인식하고 영역을 확대하여 고객관계관리(CRM), 공급사슬관리(SCM)로 확장되고 있는 것이 현재의 ERP시스템의 모습이다. 이 같이 진화를 거듭하는 이유는 정보통신기술의 변화, 기업의 내․외부 환경변화그리 고 비즈니스프로세스의 통합요구 등에서 찾을 수가 있다. 빠르게 발전하고 있는 정보통신기술이나, 기업 환경 변화 그리고 이를 해결하기 위한 비즈니스프로세스들이 빠르게 변화하고 있기 때문에, ERP시스템의 진화는 끈임 없이 진행될 것이며, 경우에 따라서 그 변화는 기존의 모습이 아닌 혁신적인 모습일 수도 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 일반적인 정보시스템의 발전모형을 근거로 ERP시스템의 역사적인진화과정을 고찰하고, ERP시스템 진화에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 영향요인을 분석하여, ERP시스템의 진화에 영향을 미치는 정보기술 과 기업의 환경변화를 중심으로 향 후 예상되는ERP시스템의 진화방향성을 제시하는데 연구의 초점을 맞추었 다. 본 탐색적인 연구결과, 진화 결정요인으로 관리통제 대상영역, 정보기술 발전추이, 조직에의 활용도, 시스 템의 통합, 개발업체의 전략과 보유기술, 시스템사용자로서의 기업의 요구를 추출하였으며, 진화 방향성은 보 다 많은 영역과 기능을 통합하며(integrate), 기업환경과 사용자의 요구에 민첩하게 반응하며(agile), 이동성이 강하면서도(Mobile), 저렴하고(cheap), 기업의 의사결정에 빠르고(fast) 광범위하게(Extensive) 활용될 수 있 는 형태의 시스템으로 진화하게 될 것이라는 결론을 도출하였다.
