The paper reviews the premodern history of Bongnyeongsa in Suwon. There is almost no record of the premodern history of Bongnyeongsa as historical facts. The most important issue here is that whether Seongchangsa or Changseongsa is the origin of Bongnyeongsa. The existing site of Changseongsa and the current location of Bongnyeongsa is too far and Changseongsa has no historical ground anecdote or legend to support the hypothesis. Then, the temple was called Bongdeogsa in early Joseon Dynasty and it may be possible to designate the temple as the memorial temple for King Sejo by Buddhist priest Shinmi of the king in 1469 (1st year of King Yejong), the same year when the Unmaksa in Namyangju was desigated as a royal tomb temple for King Sejo by his wife Queen Jeonghee. Bongdeogsa was called Taedeogsa in the Bongdeog Mountain and it is suggested that the temple is related to the royal family like most of the temples with the name of 'Taesa' in Joseon Dynasty. Then, it was the early 1800 or early period of King Sunjo that Bongdeogsa was emerged on the front stage of the history. The deliberation document stored in Bongnyeongsa states thatKing Sunjo built Hwaryeongjeon to commemorate the filial love of his father, King Jeongjo, designate the temple as the memorial temple and delivered the name 'Bongnyeong', causing to call the temple as Bongnyeongsa. The Suwon governor was responsible for managing Hwaryeongjeon and it may be suggested that Bongnyeongsa or the memorial temple of Hwaryeongjeon was managed or supported. It is supported by the fact that Suwon governor Byeonggyo Kim supported Bongnyeongsa or Yunmuk Park who supervised Hwaseong left a poem for Bongnyeongsa. King Sunjo frequently held memorial services to Hwaryeongjeon and it would be said that the memorial temple of Bongnyeongsa also held Buddhist services for his father King Jeongjo. As shown in the altar portraits of Bongnyeongsa, Bongnyeongsa is the memorial temple for the royal family to pray King Gojong, wife Queen Minbi and and their son, King Sunjong.

본고는 수원 봉녕사의 전근대 역사를 검토한 것이다. 봉녕사의 전근대의 역사는 역사적 사실로 간주할 만한 관련 기록이 거의 없다. 봉녕사의 역사에서 가장 중요한 문제는 성창사 혹은 창성사 가 봉녕사의 전신인가 이다. 현존하고 있는 창성사 터와 현재 봉녕사와는 너무 멀리 떨어져 있을 뿐만 아니라, 성창사는 이를 뒷받침해 줄만한 관련 기록이나 야사 및 설화조차 전하고 있지 않고 있다. 그 후 조선초에 봉덕사로 불리다가 남양주 운악사가 세조의 비인 정희왕후에 의해 세조의 능침 사찰로 지정되면서 봉선사라고 하였던 같은 해인 1469년(예종 1) 세조의 삼화상인 혜각존자 신 미가 중수하여 세조의 원찰로 삼았을 개연성이 없지 않다. 봉덕사는 鳳德山 奉德寺라고도 불렸 으며, 대부분, 특히 조선시대의 ‘奉○寺’라는 사찰의 사례에서 보듯이 왕실과 관련이 깊은 사찰 이었던 듯하다. 그 후 봉덕사가 역사의 전면에 크게 부각되는 것은 1800년대 초 순조대 이후이다. 즉, 봉녕사의 사중에 전하고 있는 상량문에 의하면, 순조가 아버지 정조의 효심을 기리기 위해 어진을 봉안할 華靈殿을 짓고 그 원찰로 중창하고 ‘奉寧’라는 사액을 내림으로써 봉녕사라고 불리게 되었다. 화 령전의 관리는 수원부 유수가 담당하게 하였는데 화령전의 원찰인 봉녕사도 관리 또는 후원하였 을 것이다. 이는 수원유수였던 김병교가 봉녕사의 중수를 후원하였던 사실이나 화성을 감독하였 던 박윤묵이 봉녕사 시를 남긴데서 알 수 있다. 순조가 자주 화령전에 제향을 올렸으므로 그 때 마다 원찰인 봉녕사에서도 역시 정조에 대한 추복불사가 있었을 것이다. 그 후 봉녕사의 탱화의 화기에서 볼 수 있듯이 봉녕사는 고종과 민비, 그의 아들 순조를 추복하는 등 왕실원찰이었다.
