The study explores the cultural implications of the ways in which Korean webtoons represent the young generation and their concerns in contemporary Korea. Three webtoons - , , and have been selected for a textual analysis. We found that webtoons focus specifically on the social and structural issues that engender various problems that the young generation must encounter. The webtoons suggest that involuntary unemployment, employment instability are closely related to the socio- economic context of Korea. What is noticeable is that these webtoons make these social issues as unsolved instead of making the narrative a happy ending. We argue that the open narrative can potentially encourage the audiences to think about the ways to deal with social and structural problems that cause a variety of issues that the younger generation should cope with.

본 연구는 <당신과 당신의 도서관>, <목욕의 신>, <무한동력>을 사례로 웹툰이 논의하는 청년문제와 그 재현방식을 분석했다. 분석결과 연구자는 웹툰이 이 시대 청년들이 직면하는 문제를 야기하는 사회구조적 원인을 비중 있게 다루고 있음을 발견했다. 분석된 웹툰은 비자 발적 실업과 고용 불안정 등이 긴밀한 상호연관성을 가지고 있다는 점, 국가나 기업의 정책이 이에 대한 해결책을 제시하지 못하는 무기력한 면모를 드러내고 있다는 점을 설득적으로 재 현한다. 등장인물의 문제가 모두 해결되지 않은 상태로 종결되는 웹툰의 열린 결말은 사회구 조적 원인을 진지하게 고민하지 않으면 청년문제는 근본적으로 해결되지 않으며, 청년 개개 인은 당면한 상황을 일시적으로 모면할 뿐 완전히 벗어날 수 없다는 메시지를 전달한다. 내러 티브의 불완전한 종결, 즉 미제로 남겨진 청년문제는 수용자 간의 논란거리를 양산함으로써 웹툰에 대한 댓글, 블로그 등을 통해 이러한 사회구조적 문제에 대한 문제의식과 근본적 해결 의 필요성을 공론화할 수 있는 가능성을 열어줄 수 있다.
