This study analyzed the rhetoric of persuasive attack and defense during the televised debates for the 18th Korean presidential election among Park Guen-hye, Mun Jae-in, and Lee Jung-hee, using the framework created by Benoit and Wells. Debate issues, strategies and rhetorical characteristics were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively in detail. Political affiliations were also considered. The first two debates, when three candidates were present, were analyzed separately from the third, which only had two candidates. The separate analysis was necessary due to potential differences in candidates’ rhetoric based on candidate composition. This study found that candidates employed persuasive attack more during the first two debates and used persuasive defense more during the third debate. During the third debate, candidates focused less on policy than they did in the first two debates, and increased their use of attacks on their opponents’ image by bringing up certain current events. In all three debates, persuasive attack strategies mainly consisted of increasing the negative perception of opponents’ acts. On the other hand, in the third debate, good persuasive defense strategies were employed by both candidates: the incumbent party candidate concentrated on future plans, and the opposition candidate blamed the incumbent party for the current state of affairs. Meanwhile, candidates showed their own rhetorical characteristics. Both “distance from the current administration” by Ms. Park and “a need for change” by Mr. Mun were evaluated as effective.

대통령선거방송토론위원회가 개최한 18대 대통령후보 합동 TV토론은 3자 대결의 1·2 차 토론과 양자 대결의 3차 토론으로 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 후보 구성에 따라 후보들의 수사 가 상이할 것이라 가정하고 1·2차와 3차 토론으로 나누어 후보들의 수사를 살펴보았다. 구 체적으로 이슈, 전략, 수사적 특성을 통해 후보들의 설득적 공격과 방어를 양적·질적 방법을 병행해 분석했다. 집권여당과 야당이라는 정당의 정치적 입지에도 주목했다. 분석결과 1·2 차에서는 설득적 공격이, 3차에서는 설득적 방어가 많았다. 후보 구성에 따라 상이한 수사가 구사된 것이다. 또한 후보들은 3차 토론에서 정책 이슈의 사용을 줄이고 이미지 이슈의 사용 을 늘려 의도적으로 이미지 충돌을 일으켰다. 공격 전략에서는 후보 구성에 상관없이 행위의 부정성을 강조하는 양상을 보였다. 방어 전략에서는 3차 때 도전자의 공격에 대응하여 사회 문제 해결안을 제시하려는 집권여당 후보의 수사와 사회적 현안을 집권여당의 문제로 돌리려 는 야당 후보의 전략이 수행되었다. 후보들은 고유의 수사적 특성을 드러냈는데 박근혜 후보 의 ‘현 정부와 거리 두기’와 문재인 후보의 ‘변화 요구’가 효과적인 것으로 분석되었다. 문 후 보의 ‘참여정부 계승’ 수사에 대해서는 엇갈린 평가가 가능하다.
