A Contemporary History and Its Educational Problems of Okinawa ‒Focused on the Discourse of Anti-war and Peace Education ‒ 충승の근현대사と교육문제 - 반전ㆍ평화교육론を중심に
Okinawa was forcibly annexed by Meiji Japan in 1879. During the War in the Pacific, especially in 1945, Okinawa was the only part of Japan where the large-scale ground combat had been gone through. Okinawa was administered by the US military instead of Japan until 1972. The Okinawa Peace Museum was built in 1975. The first exhibition was focused to look back upon the memory of Japanese troops who died fighting for the emperor. At that time, the sacrifice of the people of Okinawa had been ignored. Later, it was started to narrate the realities of the battle field and the Japanese army’s massacre the Okinawan inhabitants. This Museum had become a representative of peace education center in Japan. Since it was based on the nationalistic tendency of Japan, conservative politicians regard Okinawa Peace Museum as the Anti-Japan. Japanese historical view has certain characters such as glamorization for aggressive war and rationalization about colonial rule. The narration and education of Okinawan history are not match with their educational purpose from the fundamentals of education act as national and local patriotism, respect to other countries, peace and development of the world. It is necessary for Japan to make an apology for their mistakes. On that ground, Okinawan problems and the peace in Eastern Asia could be resolved.
