Osamu Dazai’s “Grasshopper”is a work based on the motive of ‘Anti-custom Spirit’ and is evaluated as illustrating the self-criticism on the popularization of the writer himself. However, at the same time, the work is criticized for easy or soft expressions on such theme causing controversial evaluations as well. Such controversial evaluations are based on attempts to read the story focusing on “husband” reminding the writer and failures to understand various timely arguments contained in the story. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the work from the point of the woman, the speaker of story and review the story referencing contexts in the same era. In 1940s, the decade when the work was written, “New System Movement” was under progression. This movement promoted the unification of the national citizen’s spirit under the totalitarianism while excluding the individualism and the liberalism causing obstacles for the war basis. Dazai expresses his values for the movement through his work“Grasshopper”. The main character who has values of the individualism and the liberalism criticizes her husband who blindly follows the trend and announces to separate from him. Such story of work shows the writer’s critical view against the totalitarianism. Also, the main character has contradictory female images simultaneously as a self-centric woman and a poor but honest woman required by the time. But, the writer has revealed this was a strategy to avoid the censorship.

太宰治の｢きりぎりす｣は｢反俗精神｣を描いたものとして捉えられ、多くの場合、作者自身の俗化への危機に対する自己批判が語られている作品と見られている。そして、その一方ではそうした主題への安易な表現が指摘され、いまだに作品に対する評価が分かれている作品でもある。このような評価を受けるようになったのは、おそらくこの作品を、作者自身を連想させる｢夫｣、すなわち男性中心に読もうとしたからであり、また、この作品に含まれている様々な時代的言説に注目しようとしなかったからだと考えられる。したがって、本稿では、視点を変えて、語られる｢夫｣ではなく、語り手の女性側に立って作品を分析し、なお同時代的コンテクストに照らしてこの作品を読んでいくことを試みた。｢きりぎりす｣が書かれた1940年には、戦時体制に障害となる個人主義, 自由主義を排除して国家共同体という全体主義への国民精神の統一を図った｢新体制運動｣が大々的に推進されていた。太宰はこのような流れに対する自分の文学者としての価値観を作品｢きりぎりす｣を通して表している。個人主義・自由主義の価値観を持っている主人公は、時流に追従するだけの、自己の持たない夫に失望し、別れることを宣言するが、このような作品の内容からは全体主義に対する作者の批判的な眼差しを確認することができる。また、主人公はエゴイストの女性と時代にふさわしい清貧な女性という矛盾した女性像を同時に持つ人物として造形されているが、これは検閲を避けるための表現戦略だったことを明らかにした。
