Three Essential Points for Dying(Lin-zhong San Da-yao) is a guide to death and dying education which suggests how to comfort a dying person, bring forth right belief, help him or her recite Buddha’s name together, and treat the dying person. The good or bad deeds remain strong in the mind of the person in the dying process. If he calls the good deeds to mind when he is near his end, he will die a peaceful death. If he calls the bad deeds to mind, he will die a painful death. The dying person who loses the vigor is seriously affected by the deeds. Helping him recite Buddha’s name together is needed at this moment. The guidebook emphasizes that the dying person should concentrate his mind on recitation and rebirth in the Pure Land. Reciting Buddha’s name is believing in Amitabha’s long-cherished wishes and the power for the salvation of all creatures. Thus, rebirth in the Buddha Land is possible when Other-power of Amitabha and Self-power of prayer coincide. The death and dying education of Buddhism should include the attitudes about death of a dying person and the family members including the relatives and the specific rituals in the dying process. The guidebook helps the dying person overcome the fear of mortality by expanding the possibilities of salvation based on the faith in the Pure Land until the last moment and suggests how for the family members to join the religious or sacred death rituals. During the rituals, the dying person and the family realize that death is a process of life and the last moment of this life which determines next life. In this point of view, we can obtain important lessons and find the way from the guidebook for making the death and dying education of Buddhism and Buddhist rituals more practical.

「臨終三大要」는 임종자의 안위와 올바른 믿음의 생기, 조념염불을 통한 염불심의 도움, 그리고 임종자가 죽음을 맞이했을 때 어떻게 다뤄야 하는지에 대한 구체적인 방법을 제시하는 임종교육 지침서이다. 임종과정에서는 그동안 익숙해져 있던 선이나 불선의 행위가 임종자의 마음에 강하게 자리잡는다. 임종자가 선한 마음을 떠올리며 죽을 때는 안락한 죽음을 맞이하게 되고, 불선의 마음을 떠올리게 될 때는 고뇌하며 극심한 고통을 경험하게 된다. 기력이 쇠락한 임종자의 경우는 익숙했던 업들이 가장 강하게 작용하고 마음은 그쪽으로만 치우치게 된다. 이때 왕생조념이 필요하게 된다. 정토신앙을 바탕으로 제시된 「臨終三大要」에서는 임종자의 마음을 온전히 염불에 두고 정토세 계로 왕생하는 데 집중하도록 한다. 염불을 한다는 것은 아미타불의 서원과 구제력을 믿는 것이다. 따라서 염불자의 자력과 아미타불의 타력이 화합하여 정토왕생의 구제가 가능하게 된다. 불교의 임종교육은 불교의 가르침을 바탕으로 임종자와 가족, 친척들의 죽음에 대한 이해와 수용 태도, 임종과정에서의 구체적인 행의에 대한 내용을 포함해야 한다. 「臨終三大要」는 정토신앙을 바탕으로 마지막까지 구제의 가능성을 확장함으로써 임종자가 죽음에 대한 두려움을 극복할 수 있 도록 하고 가족 모두가 종교적인 성스러운 임종행의에 참여하는 방법을 제시한다. 이 과정에서 임 종자뿐만 아니라 가족 모두가 죽음은 생명의 한 과정이며 다음 세계를 결정짓는 삶의 마지막 순간 이라는 점을 체득하게 된다. 이런 점에서 「臨終三大要」는 보다 효과적인 불교의 임종교육과 행 의를 모색하는 데 중요한 방향과 가르침을 제공하고 있다.
