그리스 고전기에 유행되었던 적화 도기와 흑화 도기의 기법이나 이야기 그림의 기원은 그리스 신석기 시대와 청동기 시대에 제작된 토기에서 유래를 찾을 수 있다. 이와 관련된 대부분의 신석기 토기들은 중기 신석기의 세스클로 유적지와 후기 신석기의 디미니 유적지에서 주로 출토되었다. 이러한 도기의 흑색과 적색, 흰색의 문양이나 이미지에 시도된 상감이나 채색이 그리스 적화 도기와 흑화 도기 기법을 선도하였다. 그리고 청동기 시대에는 에게 해를 중심으로 번영하였던 미노아와 미케네의 도자기에서 선행 기술이 출현되었다. 이미 미노아와 미케네의 도자기에서 그리스 적화 도기와 흑화 도기처럼 이야기가 있는 이미지를 다루기 시작했다. 신석기 토기에서는 채색된 문양을 통해서 채색기법들이 유래되었고, 청동기 토기에서는 주제가 있는 이미지를 다루는 방법이 유래되었다. 따라서 그리스의 적화와 흑화 도기는 그리스 신석기 시대의 세스클로와 디미니 토기에서 제작기법이 수용 발전되었으며, 청동기 시대의 미노아와 미케네 문명의 토기에서 스토리 있는 이미지들로부터 영향 받아서 발전된 것이다. 이 논문은, 적화와 흑화 도기의 기법이나 이야기 그림 유래 연구를 통해서 그리스 도자기의 새로운 이해를 도모하였다.
