First, I would like to give the definition of the fractal theory and analyze to its five expressive characteristics. I classify the characteristics of fractal into five groups ; the first, self-reproduction, the second, motif-unit, the third, self-similarity, the forth, repetition and sequences, the fifth, organic figure. Based on this study, through analyzing ceramic formative arts based on the foundation of characteristics of fractal, I analyzed the 2-D and 3-D ceramic formative arts both nationally and internationally. Through this study I aware of that the expressive characteristics of fractal image, especially the forms that you can find in nature, have very close relationship with art/design components, the compositional principals of art/design and the compositional methods of art/design. I can fine this characteristics in the ceramic art works. After this, not only the formative characteristics of ceramic arts, but seek for the installation format and deal with the limitation of the material(as an environmental sculpture) together.

본 연구는 먼저 프렉탈 이론의 정의에 대해 살펴보고, 프렉탈 이미지에서 보여 지는 표현적 특징들에 대해 다섯 가지로 분석해 보았다. 연구자는 프렉탈 이미지의 표현적 특성을 첫째, 자기복제의 구조, 둘째, 단위형태 구성, 셋째, 부분과 전체의 닮음, 넷째, 무한성과 연결성, 다섯째, 유기적 특성으로 분류하였다. 그리고 이 다섯까지 표현적 특징들을 토대로 국내외 전시회에 출품된 도벽 및 도자입체 조형물들을 분석하였다. 연구를 통해 프렉탈 조형의 원리(자연에서 발견할 수 있는 형태와 현상들)와 입체구성의 방법들과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 알 수 있었고, 많은 작가들의 도자입체조형 작품에서 프렉탈의 표현적 특성에 대해 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 연구를 토대로 향후, 도자입체 조형물들에 대한 조형성뿐만이 아닌, 설치 방법과 재료가 가진 한계(야외 환경 작품으로서)에 대한 연구가 병행되어야 한다.
