This article, written at the time of the 120th anniversary of theDonghak Peasant War, suggests several issues focusing on thestudy trends in Korean and Japanese academic circles since 2000,following the discovery of the skull of a Donghak military leader inKoga Hall(古河講堂), Hokkaido University. Since the discovery ofthe skull in Koga Hall, Hokkaido University, Japanese historicalmaterials have been newly unearthed and disclosed, showing broadercontents and scope for research. Korean scholars' trends also havebecome more specific and elaborate. A common feature of bothKorean and Japanese academic circles at the time was the intentionto review the Donghak Peasant War with relations to the Japanesearmy, the First Chinese-Japanese War and Japanese Invasion andColonization of Korea (using historical materials from Japan.) AKorean characteristic is that period of the presence of agovernmental council for research and studies through thefoundation (after the governmental council had a great effect on related studies). The article addresses issues and problems of relatedstudies by both Korean and Japanese academic circles since 2000 inconclusion, suggesting tasks for future research.

본고는 동학농민전쟁 발생 120주년을 맞이하여, 홋카이도(北海道) 대학 코가 강당(古河講堂)에서 동학농민군 지도자의 두개골이 발견된 이후, 즉 2000년 이후 진행되어 온 한일 학계의 관련 연구의 동향을 중심으로 그에 관한 몇 가지 시사점을 제시하였다. 시기를, 홋카이도 대학 코가 강당에서 동학농민군 지도자 두개골 발견 이후로 한정한 까닭은, 이후 일본 측 사료가 새롭게 발굴, 공개되어 연구 내용 및 범위가 확대되어 가는 모습을 보여주고 있고, 더불어 한국학계의 연구 동향도 보다 구체적인 형태로 치밀성이 두드러지고 있기 때문이다. 이 시기 한일 학계의 공통적인 특징은 일본 측 사료를 이용한 일본군, 청일전쟁 및 한일병탄, 일본의 한국식민지화의 관련 속에서 동학농민전쟁을 재조명하고자 하는 의도가 뚜렷하게 나타나는데 있다. 한국 학계만의 특징이라면, 정부기관의 관련 위원회 존속기간과 그 후 재단을 통한 연구 행사가 학계의 관련 연구에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다는 사실일 것이다. 본고에서는 마지막 부분에서 2000년 이후의 한일 학계의 관련 연구의 시사점과 문제점을 제시하여 향후 이루어져야 할 연구 과제를 기술하는 것으로 정리하였다.
