“Thesis/Dissertation Writing” is very genre specific and carries much cognitive weight for the students there is a need for Korean language education tailored to foreign graduate students. Therefore, this paper aims to find out the problems the students encounter in writing thesis/Dissertation and the effects of the Thesis/Dissertation writing class through the case study on the ‘academic writing (advanced) class’ is conducted at the Graduate School of Korean Studies. According to analysis, it was found that the students had the most difficult time “logically express their thoughts” and “properly select a proper research theme.” In addition, the Interviews indicated that students expressing difficulty in considering citation and research ethics, finding articles which is connected to the research theme, using thesis/dissertation specific words and expressions. In conclusion, it is found that language instructors should reinforce the genre-based approach in regard to the teaching. In addition, improving thesis/dissertation writing education the most effective way for students is to have them read literature reviews more. Finally, there must be more opportunities for students to interact with the academic discourse community and to have individual feedback. I suggested that three steps models which is applied genre-based approach would be effective on the thesis/dissertation writing.

장르적인 특징이 매우 분명하며 학생들에게 많은 인지적인 부담을 주는 ‘논문 쓰기’는 학문 목적 한국어 교육 에서 좀 더 관심을 가질 필요성이 있다. 본 논문에서는 한국학대학원의 ‘학술적 글쓰기(심화)’ 수업 사례 분석을 통해 외국인 유학생들이 논문 쓰기에 서 어떤 어려움을 겪고 있고 논문 쓰기 수업이 어떤 면에서 효과적인지를 살펴보았다. 조사 결과 학생들은 논 리적으로 글을 쓰는 것과 주제를 결정하는 것을 매우 어려워하고 있었으며, 자료 찾기, 논문에 맞는 표현 사용 하기, 인용하기 등도 어려워하였다. 이러한 조사 결과를 통해 논문 쓰기 교육에서 장르 중심 교육을 강화해야 하고 선행연구 읽기를 좀 더 중요하게 생각해야 한다는 점을 알게 되었다. 그리고 학생들에게 담화 공동체와 의 상호작용 기회를 확대하고 개인별 피드백을 강화할 필요성도 인식하게 되었다. 이러한 시사점을 반영하여 본 연구에서는 외국인 대학원생을 위한 논문 쓰기 수업에서 장르 중심 교수법을 적 용한 3단계 교육 방법을 제안하였다.
