This thesis proposes to inspect about the problem of the ethical subjectivity in the descendant of Cain, and to suppose the possibility of redemption and the violence of the power of the state. The descendant of Cain in the background of lend reform in the North Korea, shows the events when the power of the state reconstructed the society in violent. The power of state established the identity in dividing into two sets of people, a royal people and a disroyal people. In the case of the North Korea, the state divided the people into the landower and the tenant, and pointed out the landower as the exploiting classes. The hero of descendant of Cain, Park hoon faced the crisis because the state pegged him as a hidden leader behind the murder of the chairman of the farmer. The supervisor of a tenant farm, Do-sup took instruction of People’s Congress in Myeon that parted the relationship of Park hoon because he had been the chairman of farmer. The major core content of this work is the conflicts of Park hoon who was criminal pointed by the power of the state and Do-sup who tried to put distance of him. In the process of development, the farmer conference did the inordinateness that divided not only the landowner but also the independent farmer as a target of purge. The surplus violence prompted Do-sup, and made him attack his son and daugther with good relation of Park hoon. This work shows that Park hoon is the human of Cain's signifier by the power of the state and Do-sup is the human with Cain's mind. Do-sup's daugther, O-jak-neo who loved Park hoon had the ten- dentious action to protect Park hoon in the process of land reform. She broke off relation with Do-sup and declaired in front of her husband and village people that she became married couple with Park hoon. This act gives the signifier of criminal to her from Park hoon, and representes that she would live with Park hoon. Do-sup's son, Sam-deok who wished the happiness of his sister O-jak-neo, was hit by a sickle bacause Park hoon and Do-sup had a feud to the fault of death. This sacrifice gives Park hoon who loved O-jak-neo and knew the value of life, couraged that solved the problem of complexed relation and escaped to the South Korea. This novel's composition makes us arrive at a conclusion to modern categorical imperative of Kant that "you think personality as the aim not the method" over having confrontation with each people by the power of the state that thinks people as the method.

이 글의 목적은 황순원의『카인의 후예』에 나타난 윤리적 주체성의 문제를 국가권력의 폭력성과 구원의 가 능성이라는 측면에서 살펴보는 것이다. 1946년 3월에 벌어진 북한의 토지개혁이라는 사건을 배경으로 쓴 『카인의 후예』는 국가권력이 폭력적으로 사회를 재편할 때 벌어지는 사건을 보여준다. 국가권력은 국민을 둘로, 즉 충직한 시민과 불충한 시민으로 가 르면서 정체성을 확립한다. 북한의 경우 지주와 소작인으로 이를 나누었고, 지주를 착취자로 규정하면서 그들 을 배제하였다. 『카인의 후예』의 주인공 박훈은 지주이자 면농민위원장 살해의 배후세력으로 지목되어 위 기를 맞는다. 박훈의 마름이었던 도섭영감은 농민위원장이 되면서 박훈과의 관계를 끊어야 한다는 면인민위 원회의 지시를 듣는다. 국가권력에 의해 잠재적 죄인으로 지목된 박훈과 그와 관계를 끊기 위해 노력하는 도섭영감의 갈등이 이 작품 의 핵심 내용이다. 작품의 전개과정에서 잇달아 벌어지는 농민대회는 점차 지주를 넘어 자작농까지 숙청의 대 상으로 분류하는 과도함을 보인다. 이러한 과잉 폭력은 도섭영감을 자극하여 박훈에게 호의를 가진 자신의 아 들, 딸까지 폭행하는 현상으로 이어진다. 이 글은 소설의 제목과 관련하여 국가권력에 의하여 죄인으로 지시 된 박훈을 카인의 기표를 부여받은 인간으로, 박훈과 구분되기 위해 살욕까지 품는 도섭영감을 카인의 심성을 가진 인간으로 보았다. 도섭영감의 딸이자 박훈을 사랑하는 오작녀는 토지개혁의 과정에서 박훈을 보호하기 위해 극단적인 조치를 감행한다. 아버지와 연을 끊고 동네 사람과 남편 앞에서 박훈과 부부가 되었다고 선언하는 것이다. 이는 박훈 에게 부여된 죄의 기표를 스스로에게 부여하는 것으로, 박훈과 운명을 같이 하겠다는 의지의 표현이다. 도섭 영감의 아들이자 오작녀의 행복을 염원하는 삼득이는 박훈과 도섭영감이 서로를 죽일 정도로 갈등하게 되자 스스로 나서서 낫을 맞는다. 두 사람 사이에 형성된 살욕을 푸는 자리에 서는 것이다. 이러한 희생은 오작녀를 사랑하고 생명의 가치를 아는 박훈에게 복잡해진 인연의 매듭을 풀고 오작녀와 남한으로 탈출할 수 있는 용기 를 준다. 이러한 소설의 구성은 오늘날의 우리에게 인간을 수단으로 삼는 국가권력이 조장하는 대결의식을 넘 어 “인격을 수단이 아닌 목적으로 대하라”는 칸트의 근대적 정언명법에 도달하게 해준다.
