The primary interest of this study is to seek the research directions of the school principals' negative leadership. The effects of school principals' negative leadership are harmful to individuals, groups, and school organizations. Particularly, school principals' negative leadership tends to result in substantial damage to teachers psychological/emotional and physically/physiologically. However, previous studies about school principals' leadership have been producted focusing on a strong stream of positive leadership. In contrast, little empirical studies of school principals' leadership have systematically examined the negative leadership. There is no conceptual, theoretical, or empirical study on school principals' negative leadership. In this context, this study makes an effort to describe the concept of negative leadership, the designing research, and the applications of research findings. The concept of negative leadership is an underlying contrasting meaning of positive leadership based on the process and outcomes. this study recommends a snowball sampling, in-depth interview, and a survey method because a research topic is extremely sensitive and even incendiary in nature. And it is discussed the possibilities of application on selection, recruiting, placement, evaluation, training and promotions. Finally, this study argue the alternative value, the possibility of open critical thinking, and retention of school principals.

본 연구는 긍정적 의미 일변도로 수행된 기존 학교장 리더십 연구의 한계를 극복하는 대안으로써 학교장의 부정적 리더십 연구를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구목적에 따라 관련 문헌을 토대로 학교장의 부정적 리더십에 관한 연구의 필요성을 피력하고 개념, 연구방법, 연구결과 활용을 탐색하였다. 연구의 필요성은 부정적인 학교장 리더십의 잦은 출현과 교사의 정신적ㆍ신체적 피해 및 학교효과성 저해의 측면에서 논의하였다. 학교장의 부정적 리더십 개념은 리더십을 발휘하는 과정에서 나타나는 바람직하지 않은 생각, 태도, 행동 및 부족한 능력과 그로 인해 발행된 신체적․정신적 피해 및 학교조직의 목표 달성 실패에 관련된 총체적인 것으로 규정하였다. 연구대상은 연구주제의 민감성과 자극성을 감안하여 정량적인 근거 자료와 학교구성원 인식을 함께 고려하여 선정하는 것이 타당하고, 자료수집은 심층면담 및 설문조사를 병행하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 판단하였다. 또한 학교장의 부정적 리더십에 관한 연구결과는 선발, 연수, 평가 등 인사행정 전반에 활용하는 방안을 제시하였다. 마지막으로 이 연구의 함의점으로 기존 학교장 연구의 한계를 극복하는 대안으로서의 가치, 학교장의 부정적 리더십에 관한 열린 비판의 가능성 제고, 유능한 학교장 확보 등을 논의하였다.
