The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of preservice school counselors about the role of school counselors, the activities for career development, the obstacles of development activities, and the support needs for their career. The study used in-depth interview method for 14 subjects who enrolled in graduate school of education in Seoul. Major findings and conclusions of this study were as follows: firstly, as important roles of professional school counselors, they made mention of individual and group counseling, psychological diagnosis and measurement, administrative work, hospitals reference, counseling program development and promotion, and career guidance for students. Secondly, they utilized non-formal education and informal education rather than formal learning as career development activities. Thirdly, as the obstacles of individual career development activities, they indicated financial difficulties, the insufficient information for development opportunities, and the lack of confidence. They also pointed out the unsystematic school counseling system, a great deal of pressure of work that requires diverse roles, teachers' misunderstanding for counseling job, the lack of school support, and the unfair treatment for school counselors as organizational obstacles of their career development. Fourthly, to overcome the above obstacles, they want to receive the assistance such as the establishment of expert networks, the development of pragmatic curriculum, and the improvement of counselor training program. This study contributes to the knowledge base for school counselors in terms of basic research to shed light on the direction of career development for professional school counselors and to support the establishment of the educational policy for school counselors' career assistance.

본 연구는 14명의 예비전문상담교사들을 대상으로 그들이 생각하는 전문상담교사의 역할 수행은 무엇인지, 역할 수행을 위한 경력개발은 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지, 경력개발을 하는데 있어 저해요인은 무엇인지에 대해 심층면접을 통하여 탐색해 봄으로써 전문상담교사 수행 능력 개발의 시사점을 알아보려는 목적으로 진행되었다. 연구 결과 예비전문상담교사들은 전문상담교사가 개인·집단 상담, 심리 검사 및 측정, 행정업무, 센터·병원 연계, 부적응학생 상담, 상담프로그램 개발 및 운영, 상당홍보 및 교육, 또래 상담동아리 운영, 진로지도, 학부모 교육연수 등의 역할을 수행해야 한다고 대답하였다. 역할 수행 능력을 획득하기 위한 실질적인 활동은 대부분 비형식 교육을 통해 이루어지고 있었다. 경력개발의 개인적 측면의 저해요인은 1)금전적·시간적 어려움 2)정보 부족 3)기회의 부족 4)자신감 부족이었고, 조직적 측면의 저해요인은 1)다양한 역할 수행 요구 2)교장·교감·일반 교사의 상담 몰이해 3)전문성의 의심과 부당한 처우 4)질 좋은 연수 프로그램 부재와 학교 지원 미비 등이었다. 본 연구는 예비전문상담교사들이 전문상담교사의 역할 수행 능력을 획득하기 위해 필요한 경력개발의 방향을 보여줌으로써, 향후 국가 및 단위학교, 양성기관 등이 전문상담교사 역할을 수행하기 위한 경력개발 지원책을 설계할 수 있는 기초 연구라는 점에서 의의가 있다.
