- Clay, one of the materials frequently and widely used in many places since the prehistorical period, has been utilized in contemporary Korean art education. Playing with clay gives pleasure to students and the tactility from that activity helps them to catch the essence of the nature. Furthermore, making terra cotta works enables students not only to understand the concepts of object and space, but also to express their feelings and emotions. Terra cotta class generally provides students to understand their Korean traditional culture as well as others cultural heritages by learning terra cotta works from various historical moments around world. This study investigates the art textbooks based on the "2007 Revised National Art Curriculum and Textbook" implemented by the government and currently used in elementary, middle, and high schools. This study aims to suggest ways to improve terra cotta education. As a result of analyzing art textbooks, terra cotta curriculum needs to improve for the effective education. It requires developing gradual continuations from one to the next grade, embracing more contemporary art works, and carrying interdisciplinary approaches to make students interested. Furthermore, art textbooks need to include guidelines of 3D field such as modeling and craft fields so to effectively teach terra cotta curriculum. In addition to the improvement in curriculum, terra cotta education demands the improvement of infrastructure – physical environments like studios with essential materials and tools as well as teachers who should be knowledgeable about the nature and relevant materials of terra cotta - for the productive terra cotta education.

- 인류 초기부터 제작된 테라코타는 자연 재료인 흙을 사용하여 소조기법으로 제작한 후 불에 소성한 것으로 조소영역 안에서 그 교육이 이루어지고 있다. 테라코타 수업은 학습자에게 유희성, 자연의 본질체험, 촉각의 회복, 전통문화교육을 제공한다. 본 연구는 테라코타 교육이 학교교육에서 어떻게 시행되는지 알아보고자 2007년 개정 교육과정 초․중․고등학교 미술교과서를 통해 실태를 분석하고, 효율적인 테라코타 교육 방향을 논의해보자 하는데 목적이 있다. 교과서 분석 결과로 볼 때 테라코타에 대한 내용이 충분하지 않으며, 초․중․고등학년별 테라코타 교육의 연계성의 확보가 미흡한 것으로 파악되었다. 따라서, 학년별 연계성 확보와 내용의 심화에 대한 연구의 필요성, 현대 미술의 동향을 반영하고, 다른 교과와의 연계를 바탕으로 한 다양한 수업 내용의 구성, 그리고 물리적인 환경의 개선 등이 효율적인 테라코타 교육을 위해 제시될 수 있다.
