The purpose of this study is to examine the implication of modern art education and the meaning of art education by reviewing Plato and Aristotle‘s liberal education spirit during the ancient huirap era. To fulfill this purpose, this study inquired the presence form of mind and knowledge that is represented in terms of the reality and the contemplation as epistemological values in Plato and Aristotle's liberal education. As a result, it reveals three implications for the field of art education, first, trichotomy ontology can be acted as a structure of artistic knowledge. Second, children acquire unknowable mind(idea) in their hearts and reflect it on their art activities. Third, children unintentionally do artistic activities as contemplation and this contemplative attitude purely affects children to develop minds. Through these mind acquisition, modern people can recover their true hearts from their lost nature, and accomplish mind development as a purpose of modern art education.

본 연구는 고대 희랍의 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 자유교육 정신을 되짚어 봄으로써 현대 미술교육에 주는 시사점과 의의에 대하여 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 자유교육 정신인 실재, 관조 등의 인식론적 가치들로서 마음의 존재 양식과 지식에 관하여 알아보았다. 그 결과로서 미술교육에 주는 새로운 시사점을 발견하였는데 첫째, 삼분법적 존재론이 미술적 지식의 구조로서 작동할 수 있으며 둘째, 아동들은 미술활동을 통하여 마음 안에 미지의 마음(이데아)이 획득 될 수 있으며 셋째, 아동들은 관조로서의 미적 활동을 부지불식간에 하고 있으며 이 관조적 태도가 순수하게 작용하여 마음을 발달시킨다는 것이다. 이러한 마음의 획득을 통하여 현대인들이 잃어버린 본성의 참 마음을 회복하며 마음의 발달이라는 현대 미술교육의 목적을 실현 시킬 수가 있다는 것이다.
