The question of whether educational administration in Korea has a critical philosophical base to guide sufficiently theory development and practical issues has long been a central issue in the field. The paper is to explore some philosophical reflections on the nature of educational administration and looming tasks to enable the field to have more 'correct and deliberate approaches in methodology. Although it is difficult to categorize the philosophical positions of competing theories of educational administration, it can be said that four major forms of theory, such as traditional positivism, subjectivism, critical theory and postmodernism, have been advanced in the field to date. To our view, debate among these positions needs to be developed further. The history of philosophy is in large part a history of theories rejected because of fruitful challenge by rivals. This suggests that philosophical debate and study will be an essential condition for the development of an increasingly respectable knowledge base in educational administration. Such debate and scholarship will need to be conducted in a systematic and public manner for the sophistication of theory and the growth of knowledge in educational administration to advance.

한국 교육행정학의 철학적 기반에 대해서는 오랫동안 문제 제기가 있어 왔다. 철학적 기반이 갖는 중요성이 큰 데도 불구하고 그 실제의 취약성이 크다는 것이었다. 이 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한다. 이 글을 통해 한국 교육행정학의 철학적 기반을 형성하기 위해 어떤 과제들이 실천되고 극복되어야 하는지를 밝히고자 한다. 먼저 교육행정학에서 철학적 기반이 갖는 의의를 분명히 한 후 우리 학계의 현실을 비판적으로 진단하고, 이에 기초하여 한국 교육행정학의 철학적 기반 형성을 위한 과제를 탐색한다. 제시되는 과제는 탐구의 방향 및 주제의 차원과 여건 조성의 차원으로 나뉘는데, 전자는 전통적인 논리실증주의적 관점을 극복하는 문제에 비중을 두고 있고, 후자는 연구자의 자세와 연구풍토, 학계 차원의 준비, 철학적 분야의 ‘시장’ 문제 등을 다루고 있다.
