The purposes of this paper is to discuss a characteristics and identity of democratic citizenship education in moral education as a subject from the standpoint of structure of knowledge. In Korea, moral education and social studies have been core subjects to educate citizens democratic citizenship. But until now, democratic citizenship education in moral education has been suffered from the problem of weakness of identity such as the problem of overlap with social studies in the areas of goal, contents, teaching methods. In the situation which globalization and multiculturalism are in the rapid progress, we face many complex moral situations in a democratic nation-state and global village, so we need to be armed with moral democratic citizenship. To establish it's identity as a subject and to develop student's democratic citizenship effectively, democratic citizenship education in moral education have to orient following directions. Firstly, to emphasizing education of democratic values and virtue. Secondly, developing an ability to analyze social problems of democratic community morally. thirdly, developing moral imagination. Moral education will have to establish it's identity through focusing on the morality of democratic citizenship.

본 논문의 목적은 교과로서의 도덕과 교육에서 이루어지는 민주시민교육의 정체성과 특성을 교과의 구조 또는 지식의 구조라는 관점에서 논의하는 것이다. 한국에서 도덕과 교육과 사회과교육은 지금까지 교과교육들 속에서 민주시민교육을 담당해 온 중핵 교과들로서 자리매김해왔다. 그러나 도덕과 교육의 민주시민교육은 사회과 민주시민교육과의 목표, 내용, 교수․학습 방법 영역에서의 중복성과 같은 정체성의 약화라는 문제에 시달려 왔다. 세계화와 다문화 심화되고 있는 현실 상황에서 우리는 민족국가와 지구공동체의 복잡한 도덕적 상황에 직면하고 있다. 따라서 시민들은 도덕적인 민주시민성을 갖추어야 한다. 이러한 점에서 도덕과의 민주시민교육은 앞으로 교과로서의 정체성을 정립하고 시민들의 민주시민성을 효과적으로 발달시키기 위해서 민주적 가치, 규범, 그리고 덕목의 교육, 민주적 공동체의 사회문제들을 도덕적으로 분석하는 능력, 도덕적 상상력을 발달시키는 교육에 중점을 두어야 한다. 도덕과 교육은 민주시민성의 도덕성에 초점을 둠으로써 정체성을 확립해 나가야 한다.
