Studies on the consequences of political diversity for political participation havefocused on either mobilizing or demobilizing influence. The purpose of this study isto understand the consequences of political diversity for political participation in theframework of models of communication process. It first identifies different models ofpolitical participation in existing research: the SES and social structural model, the socialnetwork model, and information processing model. It then evaluates the models ofparticipation within the communication process paradigm with a focus on the O-S-O-Rmodel. Attempting to locate political diversity and associated variables functionally inthe models of communication process, the study expounds on how existing studies’assumptions and conclusions shifted from passive audience (SES and pre-conditions) toactive audience (individual choices and information processing). Finally, it suggests thatthe consequences of political diversity for political participation be understood as acommunication process.

정치적 다양성이 정치참여에 미치는 영향에 대한 기존의 연구들은 긍정적 또는 부정적 영향에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 정치적 다양성이 정치참여에 미치는 영향을 커뮤니케이션 과정으로서 이해하고자 하는데 있다. 먼저 사회경제 수준 및 사회구조 모델, 소셜네트워크모델, 그리고 정보처리 모델의 세 가지 정치참여 연구모델을 제시하고, O-S-O-R 모델에 초점을둔 커뮤니케이션 모델에 근거하여 제시된 세 가지 모델들을 분석한다. 정치적 다양성과 관련변인들을 커뮤니케이션 모델에 기능적으로 배치하고, 기존 연구들의 가정과 결론들이 어떻게 수동적 청자(사회경제적 수준, 전제된 배경 등)에서 적극적 청자(개인의 선택, 정보처리 등)로 초점이 이동되어 왔는지 설 명한다. 끝으로 정치적 다양성이 정치참여에 미치는 영향이 하나의 커뮤니케이션 과정으로 이해되어야 함을 제안 한다.
