This thesis addresses the bibliographical information and overall characteristics and linguistic traits as a translated version of ChoonguiShuihuzhuan(The Story of Warriors, 忠義水滸傳) which is in possession of the Institute for the Translation of Chinese Classical Literature of Sun Moon University. This translated version, which was originally in possession of Whabongmoongo, has recently been purchased by the Institute. The translated version is an incomplete set of works, composed of volume 2, 3 and 10 only. On the back of the volume "共二十三" is written, meaning that it was originally a set of 23 volumes. This volume was intended for lending. Maurice Courant mentioned the existence of the 23 volumes of Korean manuscript of ChoonguiShuihuzhuan in his book Bibliographie Coréenne. Considering the fact this version was for lending, and that it was a set of 23 volumes, it is highly likely that these three volumes were the ones for lending. What merits attention is the fact that this book was named ChoonuigiChoongui Shuihuzhuan(The Story of Patriots)rather than Shuihuzhuan(The Story of Warriors). The name change seems to have been an attempt to muffle possible controversies associated with the contents of the book. A study of the linguistic characteristics such as phoneme forms and orthography of the volumes, despite the appearance of the occasional old words, suggests that the first translation was accomplished in the early 18th century and re-transcribed in the late 19th century. The next step is to scrutinize the discrepancies between the two different versions of ChoonguiShuihuzhuan, which would reveal the different styles of translation and characteristics of the two versions.

이 논문은 선문대 중한번역문헌연구소 소장 『충의수호지』을 대상으로 자료의 서지(書誌), 번역본으로서의 전반적인 성격과 특징, 국어학적인 특성 등을 살펴본 것이다. 이 자료는 원래 화봉문고에 비장(秘藏)되어 있던 것으로 최근에 연구를 위하여 선문대 중한번역연구소에서 구 매한 것이다. 이 책은 낙질본으로 현재 <권2>, <권3>, <권10>까지 모두 3책만이 남아있다. 그러나 이책의 서배(書背)를 보면 ‘共二十三’으로 쓰여 있어, 완질(完帙)은 23책이었음을 알 수 있다. 이 자료는 세책본이다. 모리스쿠랑은 『조선서지(Bibliographie Coréenne)』에서 23책의 한글 필사본 『충의수호지』의 존재를 언급한 바 있다. 이 자료가 세책본이고 완질은 23책이었다는 점을 고려한다면 모리스쿠랑 이 세책점에서 보았던 세책본이었을 가능성이 높다. 주목할 점은 이 책의 제명이 『수호전』이 아닌『충의지(忠義志)』라는 다른 제명으로 불렸다는 점이다. 『수호전』은 내용으로 인하여 늘 논란을 일으켰던 작품인데, ‘충의(忠義)’라는 제명을 내세워 이 작품이 지닌 논란을 사전에 잠재우려했던 것으로 여겨진다. 이 자료를 통해 국어학적인 특성을 살펴보면 일부 고형의 어휘들이 보이지만 표기법, 음운형태 등으로 보아 최초의 번역은 18세기에 이루어졌고, 이후 19세기 후반 경에 다시 필사된 것으로 보인다. 차후 과제는 두 종의 세책본 『충의수호지』를 정밀하게 대조하는 일이다. 이 작업을 통하여 세책본간의 성격, 번역 양상은 물론, 두 종의 세책본의 성격 등이 확인될 수 있을 것이다.
