Today, there remain seven versions of the Gyeongpan Hongkildong-jeon. It has been made clear that amongst these versions (including Anseongpan), the earliest one is the Gyeongpan 30-sheet and the rest is derived from it. Then, what would be the original text of the Gyeongpan 30-sheet? The preceding studies have not been able to provide a clear answer to this question. It is mainly because the standard theory that Heo Gyun was the writer of the piece has hindered such attempt. Another reason would be the fact that researchers have not given thorough examination on its various editions. This paper has elucidated the fact that the original text of the Gyeongpan 30-sheet was the abridgement from rental book. And this led to the following understandings: Firstly, the writer of Hongkildong-jeon was someone who had connection with lending library. Secondly, Gyeongpan novel had its basis in the popular pieces from rental books which were abridged into appropriate length. These are the concrete evidences which show that lending library was at the center of the creation of Old Novels and its distribution.

현재 경판(안성판 포함) <홍길동전>은 7종이 있는데, 이 가운데 가장 앞선 것은 경판 30장본이고, 나머지 6종은 경판 30장본에서 파생된 것이다. 이와 같이 경판 <홍길동전>의 계통은 선명하게 정리할 수 있다. 그렇다면 경판 30장본의 원천은 무엇인가? 이 문제에 대해서는 그동안 연구자들이 제대로 접근하지 못했다. 그 가장 중요한 이유는 작자가 허균이라는 학계의 통설 때문이고, 또 다른 이유는 연구자들이 <홍길동전> 이본을 면밀히 검토하지 않았기 때문이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 경판 30장본은 세책을 저본으로 축약한 것임을 밝혔다. 이러한 사실을 통해 <홍길동전>의 작자는 세책집과 관련을 맺고 있는 인물이며, 세책으로 인기를 얻은 작품을 축약해서 만든 것이 경판 소설임을 알 수 있게 되었다. 필자는 이 논문에서 세책집이 고소설의 창작과 유통의 중심에 있었다는 사실을 구체적으로 확인했다.
