The research is intended to identify health problems and review the improvements in order to provide the information to realize the educational value of health lessons, by investigating the teachers' awareness of the health education given in elementary school physical education. To this aim, five male PE teachers were selected from D region; data were collected by health-related concept map writing, questionnaires and in-depth interviews; and the data were analyzed inductive analysis. The authenticity of data was secured by cross-member review, peer consultation, and professional consultation. According to the findings of this study, first, the concepts of the elementary PE teachers for the health education are fragmentarily formed. Second, they consider the health and safety most important as the purpose of health education, and sex education, the most important area. Third, they note that the difficulty of giving health classes is the overlap between the health class of PE curriculum and other areas (such as creative activities and health classes of health teachers). Finally, they think that the awareness of students and teachers that PE activity is only physical activity is a major factor which deactivates the health education. Fifth, they propose that health education can be activated by discarding the theory-oriented health education and convert it to various experiential and practice-oriented health education.

본 연구는 현재 초등학교 체육교과에서 이루어지고 있는 보건교육에 대한 교사들의 인식을 조사해 봄으로써 보 건수업의 문제점에 대한 원인을 규명하고 개선방향을 검토하여 보건 수업의 교육적 가치가 실현되도록 하기 위 한 정보를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위하여 D지역 체육교과 전담을 하고 있는 남교사 5명으로 연구 참여자를 선정하였으며, 자료 수집 방법은 보건 관련 개념도 작성, 질문지, 심층면담으로, 자료 분석은 귀납적 분석법을, 자료의 진실성 확보를 위하여 구성원간 검토, 동료간 협의, 전문가 협의를 이용 하였다. 본 연구 결과는 첫째, 초등체육전담 교사들의 보건 교육에 대한 개념이 단편적으로 형성되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 보건 교육의 목적으로 건강과 안전을 중요하게 인식하고 있었으며 성교육을 가장 중요한 영역 으로 인식하였다. 셋째, 보건 수업을 실시하는데 있어서의 어려움으로 체육교과내의 보건 수업과 다른 영역(창 의적 체험활동, 보건 교사의 보건 수업)과의 내용이 중복되는 것을 지적하였다. 넷째, 체육활동은 곧 신체활동이 라는 학생들과 교사들의 인식이 보건 교육을 비활성화 시키는 주요 요인으로 보았다. 다섯째, 보건 교육을 활성 화시키기 위해서는 이론중심의 보건 교육에서 벗어나 다양한 체험 및 실습 중심 보건 교육으로 전환해야 함을 제시하였다.
