The fantastic nature of narration and ambivalent writingLee, Hye-rinThis thesis was written to study the ambivalence in the discourse method inIlji Ha’s Testimony. Testimony describes the “conversational” communicationbetween the “unreliable narrator” and the “coercive narratee” who is forcingthe speaker to provide testimony. The unreliable narrator is deprived ofnarrative authority and requests an implied author, and the meaning of thiswork shifts depending on the distance between the narrator and the impliedauthor. The narratee participates in the narrative transaction through theconfrontation with the unreliable narrator, and provides dynamics to thecommunication in Testimony. However, the point exists in Testimony wherethe discourse method to invite the others ultimately culminates to excludeothers. In conjunction with the ambivalence of the “fantasy” in the narrator’sdiscourse, the positivity of “conversational” communication and the negativityof soliloquy simultaneously emerge. Such characteristic of Ilji Ha’s Testimonyis interesting because it fiddles with the essence of story which comes alivethrough contract and transaction. This thesis attempts to review the meaningand limitations of ambivalent writing in Testimony which symbolizessoliloquy and conversation along with reality and fantasy simultaneously.
