Beyond the World of Color, To the World of Light andShade-Cho Dong-keel’s Novels Examined through a Fog Motif-Choi, Young-ukCho Dong-keel’s novels having fog as a motif show the world of his worksthat is proceeding to the third world, beyond the conflicting perspective onhumans and lives. This paper targets six short novels, ｢Get Away, Fog｣, ｢Fog of 20 Years｣,｢Suffering from Fog｣, ｢Mother’s Fog｣, ｢Scent of Fog｣, and ｢Period ofSettling in the Foggy Town｣. In ｢Suffering from Fog｣, fog is an illusion. Although fog blocks the reality, it shows concealed freedom and truth, allthe more. In ｢Get Away, Fog｣, fog means everything that intends to attenuate freewill of humans. In ｢Mother’s Fog｣, fog means the present that embracessorrow of the time and conceives the future. In ｢Period of Settling in theFoggy Town｣, fog means problems of neo-liberalism. In ｢Fog of 20 Years｣and ｢Scent of Fog｣, fog means the attribute of love that has an uncertainborderline between eroticism and narcissism. Cho Dong-keel, through his novels having fog as a motif, embodies ahuman character that is influenced by the suppressive state of the time butdoes not surrender to it, and seeks a healthy and positive path of life. Andthey show the attribute of love where eroticism and narcissism mingle together. 색(色)의 세계를 넘어선 농담(濃淡)의 세계․191In Cho Dong-keel’s novels, fog creates a deep world that embraces theconflicting world and is led by light and shade. Fog is a material that bestrepresents Cho Dong -keel’s novel world.
