This thesis considered that how Plato’s view of physical education backed up the modern science of psychology in what respect. Plato did not regard physical education as improvement of the physical condition and put ultimate purpose of the physical education on character building. He regarded body as the bowel containing spirit, thought that strong and sound bowel can contain the sound spirit and can maintain the spirit in its entirety. Why we do the physical education and physical activity in modern meaning is to live a mentally healthy and satisfactory life through maintaining the health of body in optimal condition. In this respect, Plato’s view of physical education can translate into backing up the cognitive perspective and positive psychology of the modern science of psychology. Also, view of physical education can be regarded as backing up the developmental psychology. Plato emphasized that people need to learn the physical education to carry out correct developmental task for our lifetime. Therefore view of physical education can be regarded as backing up learning theory and leadership theory. Because Plato emphasized the necessity of physical education and general education on realizing and leading the ideal nation.

본 논문은 플라톤의 신체교육관이 어떠한 점에서 현대 심리학을 지지하 고 있는가를 고찰해 본 것이다. 플라톤은 신체교육을 물리적인 신체 조건 만을 향상시키는 것으로 간주하지 않았으며, 신체교육의 궁극적인 목적을 인격형성에 두었다. 플라톤은 신체를 영혼을 담는 그릇으로 보았으며, 튼 튼하고 건강한 그릇이 건강한 영혼을 담을 수 있고, 이를 온전히 보존할 수 있다고 보았다. 현대적 의미에서 우리가 체육 및 신체적 활동을 하는 이유는 신체의 건강을 최적의 상태로 유지하여 정 신적으로 건강하고 만족스런 삶을 살기 위 한 것에 있다. 이러한 점에서, 플라톤의 신체교육관은 현대 심리학의 인지 적 관점과 긍정심리를 지지하는 것으로 해석된다. 또한, 신체교육관은 발 달심리학을 지지하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 플라톤은 인간이 올바른 발달과 업을 수행하기 위해서는 태아기부터 생존해 있는 동안 신체교육이 필요하 다고 강조했다. 신체교육관은 학습이론 및 리더십이론을 지지한다고 볼 수 있다. 플라톤은 이상국가를 실현하고 이끌어 가는데 있어서 신체교육 과 교양교육의 필요성을 강조했기 때문이다.
