이 논문에서는 하종오의 시를 중심으로 문학 작품 속에 형상화된 다문화 사회의 실상과 그 이면을 비판적으로 파악한 뒤 여기에서 발견된 현대 한 국 사회의 문제점을 극복하기 위한 하나의 방안으로 세계시민정신에 부합 하는 인식 태도를 모색해 보고자 한다. 세계시민으로서 올바른 정신과 자 세를 지니기 위해서는 문화나 이념을 달리하는 모든 민족이나 국가 사이 의 화해와 협력을 지향하는 태도가 필요하다. 이러한 문제의식 아래 한국 현대시에 표상된 다문화 현상을 반성적으로 고찰하고 세계화 시대의 바람직한 시민정신이란 무엇인지 비판적으로 성찰하는 것이 이 논문의 최종 목적인 것이다. 외국에서 이주해 온 노동 이민자나 결혼 이민자에게 한국적 특성을 주입 해서 완벽한 한국인으로 변신하기를 바라는‘ 동화의 방식’은 오히려 역효 과를 초래할 수 있다. 오히려 그들의 문화를 먼저 우리가 수용하고 이해한 뒤 그들의 문화와 정서를 공감하는 역지사지의 과정이 필요하다. 이러한 노력을 문학 텍스트를 통해 꾸준히 펼쳐온 시인이 바로 하종오이다. 그는 10년이 넘게 외국 이주민에 대한 우리 사회의 배타성을 비판하는 시편들 을 꾸준히 발표하였다. 하종오의 시를 중심으로 한국의 현대시에 나타난 다원화 사회의 다양한 양상을 살펴보는 일은 세계시민정신이 과연 무엇인 지 우리에게 진지한 질문을 던지기 때문에 큰 의의가 있다.
