Employing Felder & Silverman's (1988) Index of Learning Style (ILS), this study investigates the learning styles of 538 Korean undergraduates and discusses their preferences and gender differences in their learning styles based on the questions of four categories of ILS: perception, input, processing, and understanding. The results show that significant differences in learning styles between genders were statistically identified: male students prefer intuitive, visual, active and global learning styles more than female students, while female students prefer sensing, verbal, reflective and sequential styles more than male students. Also, the results from this study and the previous studies employing ILS show that the most dominant learning styles of Korean undergraduates are sensing and visual learning styles while reflective/active and global/sequential learning styles are evenly preferred. This result is different from Felder & Brent's (2005) research which shows that American engineering students prefer active and sequential learning styles to reflective and global ones. Considering that engineering students are mainly males, when they are compared with Korean male students, Korean male students prefer intuitive and global styles more than American engineering students. These different results indicate that students’ preferences of learning styles are culturally different. The pedagogical implications of this study are that gender differences in learning styles should be considered in general education and that instructors should try to find teaching methods satisfying diverse learning styles and employ them in general education.

그동안 국내의 교육심리학 분야에서 학습자의 학습양식의 차이에 대한 논의가 간혹 있어왔지만, 이들 연구는 다양한 검사지를 통해 이루어진 개별적 연구여서 그 결과가 서로 비교된 적이 없다. 특히, 대학의 교양교육에서 대학생의 학습양식의 차이를 고려한 교양교육의 필요성이 대두된 적도 없고 이에 대한 논의도 없었다. 이에 본 연구는 Felder와 Silverman(1988)의 ILS를 사용한 국내외 선행연구들과 비교하기 위해, 중앙대학교 남녀 학생 538명에게 실시한 ILS 온라인 검사의 응답 결과를 정보인지영역, 정보입력영역, 정보처리방식영역, 정보이해영역으로 나눠 ILS 문항별, 성별로 분석하고, 그 결과를 ILS를 사용한 선행연구와 연계하여 한국 대학생들의 학습양식 선호도를 논의한다. 연구결과, 성별에 따른 학습양식은 유의미한 차이가 있었고, 한국 대학생들(N=4969)의 학습양식 선호도는 Felder와 Brent(2005)가 연구한 미국 공과대학생들((N=2506)과 달랐다. 공대생의 경우 남학생들이 많을 것이라는 가정 하에 한미 비교를 하였을 때 한국 남학생들은 미국 공대생보다 직관적 포괄적 학습양식을 더 선호하여서 학업 스타일이 문화별, 성별로 다를 수 있다는 사실을 시사하였다. 따라서 대학의 교양교육에서 보다 효율적인 학습효과와 수업 만족도를 성취하기 위하여 학습자가 선호하는 학습양식에 따라 효율적인 수업전략과 교수학습 방법을 개발하고, 성별차이를 고려한 교수학습을 설계할 필요가 있다.
