This study aims to investigate the nature of knowledge-based society and establish the theoretical foundation of liberal education system in university. It can be summarized as follows. First, knowledge-based society is an era emphasizing the integration of knowledge, the culture of knowledge creation and unique personalities. Second, the knowledgebased society requires‘ adventurous self’ as a new model of human beings, who possesses creativity and the ability to integrate knowledges. Especially, creative thinking is the essential condition for the knowledgebased society. Third, we have to reform the liberal education system in university to go along with the knowledge-based society. Above all, the ‘open education’ system should be devised and the whole perspective of liberal education should be changed. Fourth, the purpose of liberal education system can be legitimately understood as‘ discovery of self’ concerning to the change in perspective of liberal education. Learners are to be spontaneous in learning, while educators are to be professionals of coursework development. It is definitely necessary to create curriculum focusing‘ the forms of knowledge’, to develop materials for creativity and to provide‘ close educational relationship’ as a new kind of teaching method.

이 연구는 대학 교양교육체제를 개혁하고자 할 때 선행해야 할 이론적 기초를 마련한다 는 문제의식에서 시작되었다. 이 연구는 지식기반사회의 도래가 교양교육체제에 주는 시사점이 무엇인지에 대해 묻고 있다. 대학 교양교육과정의 개념과 체계는 변화하는 사 회의 성격에 따라 재구조화되어야 한다는 관점에서, 먼저 지식기반사회의 성격을 개념 화하고, 이것에 준하여 대학의 교양교육체제에 대한 이론적 논의를 전개하고자 했다. 논의 내용를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지식기반사회는 지식정보화와 지식융합의 시 대이며, 지식생산의 문화창조시대이고, 개성의 시대이다. 둘째, 지식기반사회가 요구하 는 새로운 인간상은 “모험하는 자아”이며, 창조적 인재이고 지식융합적 인재이다. 지식 기반사회는 핵심능력으로서 특히 창의적 사고능력을 요청한다. 셋째, 지식기반사회에 조응하는 방식으로 대학 교양교육체제를 개혁해야 한다. ‘열린교육체제’를 형성해야 하 고, 교양교육에 대한 관점을 전환해야 한다. 넷째, 교양교육에 대한 관점으로서, 대학 교 양교육의 목적을 “자아발견”으로 설정한다. 학습자는 배움의 자발성을 가진 자이며, 교 육자는 코스웍기획의 전문가이다. 교육과정으로 ‘지식의 형식’에 입문하는 교과를 편성 하고 창의력 교재를 개발하고, 교육방법으로 ‘밀착의 교육적 관계’를 형성하는 것이 요 청된다. 이 연구에서 표명한 가치판단을 근거로 삼고 교양교육체제의 현재상태에 대해 냉철하게 반성함으로써, 지식기반사회에 조응하는 ‘책임 있는’ 교양교육활동을 실행할 수 있는 현실적합한 방안을 설계해야 한다.
